I have been looking at adding an aftermarket exhaust but I feel the "off the shelf" stuff is extremely overpriced.
Has anyone kinda custom engineered something themselves? I have done this before by buying the mufflers separately, then guiding a local shop on how to put it all together with tubes they supply.
I was thinking of buying a single long custom muffler (Borla XR-1) and having it mounted in the tunnel section with some new fresh bent tubes back from the exhaust manifold to the dual inlet\outlet muffler and split out at the rear. (maybe get high flow cats too. or just bypass them.)
Add chrome tips and presto!
I bet if you did your home work this could\would be awesome.
thoughts? has any one you done something similar to this???
I have seen the A&A mod but it does not go far enough for me.
I think the Borla Stinger is a cost effective system. Also, I have seen the Dyno-Max systems for around $500. How much cheaper would it be to have one built for a Corvette?
I have a custom built 3 inch stainless system on my car. They built everything from the header flanges to the pipes bent over the rear axle(including the rear axle pipes). I bought two 5inch/20inch long SuperTrap mufflers to the rear.
The custom part of the system have no cats, a x-pipe, one dual inlet/outlet muffler, over the rear axle tubes, the total cost was about $800 + the cost of the SuperTraps. So it's not cheap compared to a 'off the shelf' system. The labour was about 8 hours, maybe the labour is cheaper in the US than in Sweden.
As you can see in the picture I did not have it polished so you can see the colouring from the welding heat. But if you want to pay some extra hours you can have it polished to a mirror like finish.
I could never justify the cost either, that was before Borla Stingers. They run $409-460 shipped from forum vendors. Weight much less than stock, near Z06 Ti weight. The few dyno testes that have been done have been impressive (for a C5 exhaust). They look good and sound great, are very liveable with no drone or resonace and sound mean when you get into it.
With a custom exhaust, I would also be concerned about resonance. Part of the high cost of the off the shelf systems is that they spent time making sure the systems don't resonate. I don't know if there's any way to predict whether a custom exhaust will resonate or not. It also depneds on your intended usage....
I was fortunate enough to get a Corsa Pace Car installed for free. Some idiot was showing off with his Vette and got into a tangle with a stone wall and some shrubbery. My mechanic was the one who replaced the exhaust for him, and he grabbed the old one for me. After 20 minutes of bending and painting, you can't tell this exhaust was ever damaged. I love it, but I don't think I ever would have paid $800 for it.
I beg to differ, resonance was a problem with the Stingers on my car, and has been with some others. It's not a problem on most, but not all. Just making sure people know.

Yeh, every c5 reacts differently to same mods... always weird, but its the same with other aftermarket systems too. I'm glad mine are perfect.
I have seen the Bola stingers and they look pretty sweet.
My fear is how loud will they be with no Cats.
Please tell me where you saw a system from DynoMax, I have looked but I can't find.
ncvetteman.....
I would also like to know where you saw the Borla Stingers for the "$409-460 shipped from forum vendors"
I am interested in that price
It was about 2 weeks ago when I got a couple quotes, LAPD and Nate@Xtreme (both forum vendors) are both in that range. I imagine they are both still in that range. They are both excellent vendors.
The center muffler has dual 3 inch inlets and outlets, it's a straight through racing design (you can look straight through each pipe) and yes the axle pieces are 3 inch as well. But sorry I have no soundclips, I can try to get some as soon as my new engine is installed (It arrived from DRM to Stockholm two days ago) I think it will be around two weeks before we are ready.
All parts in the systems are handmade by a swedish company called Ferrita. They build most of the race car exhausts in Sweden.
The center muffler is made by Ferrita as well. They make it to the length you want so you can have it in a 5inch length to a 50inch if you want :)
I'm running without any plates at all on the SuperTraps so it's very loud :D I have a set of LG headers on order when I get them I will install race cats and have the exhaust modified to fit the long LG headers. I think the cats will quite things down.
I will post soundclips as soon as I have the car running.

Re: Build your own exhaust? (pkmoose)
Well considering that it just cost me $175 to have a Flowmaster Delta Flow Muffler installed on a 2000 chevy truck, and there wasn't that much to it, I'm thinking that the kits re not really that horribly priced. I think we have flowmaster setups for C5s for about $599, including chrome tips and manderel bends. The custome built systems that I have seen have either cost an arm and a leg or looked like crap. IMHO I would go with a designed system like, Magnaflow, Corsa, Flowmaster... and spend $600 to $1200 and enjoy the ride. Actually, that is what I did :D
Dude email me for pics, I have a $240 Magnaflow system. I dyno'd no other mod at 313RWHP & 339 RWTQ before I did the rest of the mods to my car. I was just asking RAM AIR TONY about why we can't post pics to our topics, because I wanted to attach some pics. Tony told me they have ability but not the space...so emial me and I will shoot you back some exhaust pics.
