I'm rené and i live in the Netherlands. i'm pretty new on this forum and have never posted anything, because englisch is verry difficult for me. for that i'm sorry, but i try the best i can.
i own a 1997 corvette witch is a US car. Imported in 2008 from the states.
in the netherlands whe have a metric system. so far no problem. i can switch from miles to kmph. but when i go over 200 kmph, i can not read the speed. (i have to calculate the speed) a 1997 has no HUD.
now i want to do a cluster swap including HUD.
is it posible to use a canadian cluster (witch has also metric) and add a projector and the switch and make it work?
people here in the netherlands say, that you cant use a canadian cluster because you have to chance something in the computer????. (hase to do something with sale off country?)
i know that i need a late 1999 cluster to make it work because off the connection on the cluster.
the easy swap would be an US set with projector etc. than i can read the speed in the windshield. but it would be nice iff the speedo where also up to 300kmph.
is this posible or is a miles cluster with hud the only option?
Hi and welcome to the forum! I'm not the expert on this so hopefully someone who is an expert will tell you the facts. I believe you can do this, using a cluster from a hud-enabled car such as the '99 as you said. Canadian cars do have the cluster which will go to 300kmh. The hud plugs directly into the cluster itself. One issue is the cluster is where the odometer is stored therefore for whatever legal issues you might have over there in regards to odometer mileages being accurate for the car, you will have to have your odometer's mileage, programmed into the new cluster. Then get yourself a HUD and do the installation. Lots of references in here on the doing that yourself. Hopefully someone else will also add their suggestions.
Gene Culley at www.gmpartshouse.com might be able to help you with the parts to do this but I doubt with the odometer mileage update...but ask him as he might know where and how to find someone who can legally do this for you.
getting the mileage right is the easy part. there are a lot of tuners here in the netherlands that can set the mileage to the one i have in the car. on Ebay there are a couple of metric clusters for sale, but no HUD. and i don't know iff they have the HUD plug. there are also some HUD sets with ore without clusters. the swap is easy. i found this here on the forum.

i'm mailing now with some one on e-bay. he has a metric cluster for sale but dont know if it has the HUD plug on top off the cluster. he will look tonight if it is and send me pictures. i allready found out that a miles to metric swap is not a problem. iff the cluster is HUD suiteble, i only need the set with the projector(including harnas), the Bezel and the switch with harnas. but those are lost avelable on e-bay.

There is only a ribbon cable from the HUD to the cluster. All data and power go through that small cable.
all 99+ clusters have the HUD connector on top, but when the car has no HUD, the dimmer switch is a 7 pins connector that go's to the cluster. i can't find a picture on the internet that shows that connector on the cluster. that should be a 11pins connector then?

that's the ribbon everyone is talking about. If you buy a HUD cluster with the HUD switch already installed,it should have the ribbon harness on it. If not you can make one, out of two old 7 pin dimmer harnesses.I've done it a few times. You will only be adding 4 wires, and using the long plugs on both ends. One of the plugs will need to have one alignment guide trimmed off,but it affects nothing and looks professional when done. GM doesn't provide the 11 pin harness any longer. pm me your email address and i will send you a clear up close pictures of the 11 pin harness.
found a complete set on E-bay. cluster(miles unfortened, but the set was so cheap and had warranty, that i could throw the cluster away and look for an metric cluster), projector and all the cabels. only thing missing was the bezel. and that i ordered new at Corvette Central.
there are 2 metric clusters for sale on E-bay. one is new and there for expensieve.
the other is cheap, but i dont know iff de hud connector is present. and the seller doesn't reply on mail from forreners.
