Driver's side mirror "popped" the nut that retains the spring. Now the swiveling feature has no tension and I've had to tape the mirror"s housing to the stanchion.
Dealer says I need to replace the entire mirror/stanchion assembly. Anybody else have this occur or know of a reasonable fix.
Depending on how important the swivel functionality is to you, drilling through the base of the mirror cowl into the stanchion [thanks for this word!] and running a screw through is very solid and painfully economical. I forgot that I'd stuck mine on with 2X tape for 1-1/2 years before I ran the screw.
Same thing happened to me. My wife's 98 driver's mirror "flopped" and I took it to the dealer and they fixed it under extended warranty - not the GMPP. Brand new mirror, painted and installed $330, cost me $50.00(deductible). :D

Do a search in achieves and you will see pictures of the screw fix. I used that to fix mine. The mirrors are junk, this topic comes up once or twice per month. :nonod:

I have sent you the document that shows how to fix your mirror problem. If there is anyone else that needs this info., email and I will get it to you as well!
Someone broke the drivers side mirror on a '97 I owned I took it apart and popped the spring clip back on and then j b welded it to make it stay. I was a real pain to get it back on though, took many attempts. I didn't have the car long after that so I don't know the longevity of the fix.
Pardigm,
Warranty should cover it if you are still in warranty. GMPP will cover it with no deductible if you aren't in warranty. On my 97 GMPP paid $274 total including the body shop effort for repainting the mirror.

Re: Broken side mirror (Paradigm)
I jsut had this happen to me about 2 months ago.... same exact thing... no swivel tension at all... it would just spin around... I had to put tacky in between to keep it from moving before I had it fixed.... YES you have to replace it all, it is impossible to get inside the mirror with the leverage you need to fix the spring... so a new one is necessary... they also come un-painted so you have to get them painted... WARRANTY covered mine so I wasnt out anything....you may check on that... I do have an extended one....hope this is helpful :smash:
