Hmmm, interesting! Must be really soft metal! Car only has 80K miles.
Since I didn't think this was normal, I didn't think to do a search. Never seen this on SB or BB chevys I've taken apart. At least not one that fat! And oh yes, it had a nasty oil leak, for a long time judging by the accumulated 3/8" of grunge all over the bottom of the engine etc. Kept any oil from hitting the ground!
I recently installed a new balancer and seal. I noticed the seal is a rather hard material compared to other seals I've seen. Perhaps this accounts for the wear?
Today I cut out the center of my old balancer. The plan is to hone it for a slip fit on the crank and make it into a tool to align the front cover before tightening the bolts.
Anyway, I discovered that the center hub (and the seal surface) is aluminum. No one mentiond that as a possible cause why these can wear out so easily. So now I know why.
Pretty interesting.
Anyone know where I put my small ball hone? I can't seem to find it. Maybe I'll call information.
get an ATI balancer if you can. I have found them on the auction site where ATI sells them out the back door as "scratch n dent" but when I got mine I could not find anything wrong with it.
