I an a new '02 Coupe A4 owner, and I'd like to "beef-up" my exhaust. However, I read several threads mentioning "resonance," especially as it relates to A4 transmissions.
First, what exactly is resonance? Also, why does it apply more to A4's than MN6's? Finally, does anyone have the Stingers on an A4? How do they sound?
Re: STUPID QUESTION - What is Resonance? (COOL COUPE)
Resonance occurs between 1,800-2,200 rmps. Its a droning buzzing type of sound inside the car. Its usually worse on A4's because you can't control the RMP's at which you cruise as you can in a manual car. I'm sure there is someone with the stingers on an A4 that will chime in.
Re: STUPID QUESTION - What is Resonance? (omrossi)
Thanks, guys. Anyone with an A4 and Stingers?
Also, I'm not looking to wake the neighbors, and my C5 is a daily driver. What exhaust is reasonably priced, and sounds great on an A4 (with no resonance)?

Nobody likes it as an answer, but really all C5s react diffently. The same exhaust on one car may resonate while one on another same one will not. I think "most" Stinger owners, A4 and MN6 have little or no resonance. I theory, it should not be different between the two, only in a MN6 its more avoidable b/c you can choice your gear. On my particular C5, a Hardtop MN6, little-no resonance at any speed that I've knoticed, actually less than the stock exhaust and my other aftermarket exhaust that I removed. I love them. I read every review on the stingers thats been posted before I bought mine, I don't think that there was a widespread issue with it on A4s, I'm sure there are some as there are on just about every exhaust.

I don't think "resonance" has really been properly defined. Generally, resonance is sympathetic vibrations excited in the car's body by the exhaust pulses. As such, if the exhaust is passing sound energy, the car will always "resonate." The only thing the exhaust determines is how many of those frequencies are being passed.
That said, if you are happy with the stock exhaust's resonance (it does, you know) then stick with it. Any after market system that is louder than stock runs the risk of "resonating" the car body at some particular frequency where it's resonant. But, if you want your car to sound decent, you need to get rid of the stock system. The louder after market systems all resonate the car's body at its sympathetic frequencies. Some pass more energy at those frequencies than others. Corsas have little output below about 2500, so they resonate least. They also sound make Vettes sound like they're running a 3.5L instead of a 5.7L engine. If you like the sound of high-winding Eurocars, you'll like Corsa Indy's. If you want your car to sound more like NASCAR, buy something else. I've heard a lot of systems, but none comes close to the Stingers, overall. My A4 with 3.15 has no unpleasant resonances. They are all quite pleasant, thank you. :D

Re: STUPID QUESTION - What is Resonance? (nevadacoin)
stingers will wake up the everyone everywhere :yesnod:
 What is he talking about? Unless you open the throttle considerably, they're a lot quieter than most pick-up trucks with dual exhaust systems. Certainly a LOT quieter than a Harley. This kind of misinformation is what makes people buy Corsas and then have to take them off and put on Stingers. :yesnod:
Re: STUPID QUESTION - What is Resonance? (omrossi)
Nothing really new to add...only my experience. I LOVE MY STINGERS!. They're not as loud as some have indicated on my '01 A4 at less than wot, maybe due to the precats. There's little if any resonance and if/when I think I hear some, it's only on very cold start-up (overnight). I like that now I can rev the engine and not be embarrased. Also, prior to the Stingers, I couldn't hear the exhaust decelerating in 4th. Now I know it's there and that's a good thing! Also, I resisted at first thinking I couldn't live without 4 tips. Now I wouldn't have it any other way. Put be down as one very happy Stinger owner :yesnod:
