When installing the Blackwing last week I had access to the MAF. I watched as Bob (VIOLATOR) took a screwdriver and just popped it right out. I cannot advise on the gains taking the screen out...but acceleration is smoother because of the Blackwing. :seeya
This is a easy mod for about 3-5 h.p. but better a more responsive throttle and a leaner burn.Use a razor knife and carefully cut around the perimeter of the MAF. It's about 1/4 in. thick so be sure you get all the way through and be sure not to leave any shavings or pieces in the MAF. Be careful to not touch the small sensors in the MAF.You CAN do this!!:D
Don't waste your money on the aftermarket MAF ....I did , It ran way to rich...and then sold it after the PCM programmed.
I too removed mine after seeing my AFR's from my first dyno. My car was running very RICH my AFR's dropped as low as 10.9:1. Removing the screen LEANS out the AFR. From SOTP my car feels much stronger. My next dyno pull will show me how much benefit I gained. I understand if your car is running close to ideal (12.5:1- 13.5:1) removing the screen may lean out your car too much. That's why this is such a crap shoot.
Knowing that my car was running very RICH I figured I was safe. But I'd want to know that before yanking/cutting it out.

Lean/Rich, what's missed here is the PCM sets it over time, regardless of whether you leave in the MAF screen or not. It doesn't matter, as far as mixture, because the computer is reading input to and output from the engine, and adjusting accordingly. Read the users guide to LS-1 edit to see how this works (it's online, just search).
The Z-06 MAF is like the LS-1, except the screen is missing. Take it out! :yesnod:
Not every LS1 is tuned to spec's that why there are all these TUNERS out there. The day we dyno'd we had cars that were identical to mine record as much as 20 RWHP more (BTW mined dyno'd at 293) and the AFR's were all over the place. No rhyme or reason. Like I said my AFR's dropped like a rock from 5200 to 6100 RPM's to 10.9:1 where the guys pulling 310 to 315 were up around 12.0:1 and better.
What would explain varying difference's in AFR's if the PCM did everything correctly everytime?
I wouldn't think one could notice 3-5 HP. AFVETTE, I'm a tuning fan and plan to get LS-1edit when it's available for my 02. Yes, tuning, especially tuning on a dyno to view real-time effects of changes through the RPM range. That said, the PCM DOES adjust to intake modifications, within its programming limitations. So the point I was making stands: the PCM will adjust for your new Blackwing, whatever, as well as the MAF screen being in or out, within its limitations. Custom tuning can result in improvements beyond that, but I wouldn't count on a MAF screen decision to "fine-tune" my FA mix. The computer will do that, then your tuner can do more.
I just took my screen out and it took me about 10 minutes total time. That includes taking out the MAF.The screen took about 30 seconds and it was very easy.I used a little screwdriver(small eyeglass screwdriver)and needle nose pliers to pry out the screen.Hre are two pics.
I also jammed a screw driver in it and pulled it off. Did the same for my other cars years ago...no adverse affects, so.....eh if it gives it some HP...great. None of my cars feel they have lost any either. :yesnod:
My mechanic, who by the way, is experienced in racing, as well as owning his own successful, auto shop for 12 years, said "don't remove it, make up the gains elsewhwere." I'm with him, because when we installed my k&n airfilter, I got a chance to see the MAF, and there was some significant dirt in there--not too much, but enough for me to leave it alone. Save your motor. I like the added protection. IMHO, the extrta 2-3hp isn't worth srewing up my motor..
