Inner shift boot not flush, and Name That Shifter!
I just recently put my car back together after wheel hop took out my transmission and differential. Rick at RKT56 worked over the weekend to get me back on the road and texted me pictures every step of the way (Just a plug for an extremely good vendor ) Anyway, I've gotten everything back together and I noticed that a lot of road noise and transmission noise comes from the shifter area. After looking at it closer, it seems the inner shift boot (the rubber one that has 4 bolts) doesn't sit flush on the drivers side, it bows up. All 4 bolts are down tightly, I tried centering the shifter a bit and it doesn't change.
I also believe I have an aftermarket shifter. I can't find any markings on it, and I'm sure its probably the cause for this but I don't really understand why. It doesn't seem to be adding any extra stress to the boot to raise it up.
Does anyone recognize the shifter? Thanks in advance for any help.
At that price point I can't believe the quality control would be very good and I wouldn't be surprised to find there are fitment issues... Not sure if that helps you or not.

I went back out and looked and I have no idea why my phone took it as purple, its a black base. It doesn't look like that shifter, but I've narrowed it down to a Kirban (http://www.kirbanperformance.com/pro...R+%231315.html)
Difinitely aftermarket.
You think the bolt & spacer may need to be on the passenger side & the nut installed on the drivers side?
Why not get ahold of Rick & see what he thinks, while your car repair is still fresh in his mind?
Good luck.
It's not the $20. one off E bay.
I believe your right in assuming it's a Kirban
Once the rubber boot is on, the shifter rod bolts are above it, so I don't think its whats holding it up. I did the removal/installation, he just repaired my transmission and differential. I'll take a picture of the boot.
Its a hard angle to get to, but the white part you see is the edge of the car, so that's exposed area. I can push it all the way down flush how I assume it should be, but it just springs back up.
No, I thought of that too. If you look at the first shifter picture, see the metal ring? The rubber boot has a ring on the inside of it and it loosely "sits" on that ring. I tried taking the ring off and it doesn't change the fitment at all, so I don't think that's whats raising it up.
Okay, so its not anything stopping it up, just warped over time? I've only had the car since August and its always had the noise, so its been like that since I bought it. Thanks!

Cool. I just remembered the ebay one because it's the only shifter I've ever seen with a purple base...

Oh you didn't mention that the noise was there prior to having been worked on.
Could you just eliminate or flip/reverse, that cupped ring & then see if it fits?
I have a Kirban shifter and it also came with the aluminum cup that sits on the top of the shifter. It's to completely seal the rubber boot to the shifter so less noise is transfered into the cabin. My rubber boot doesn't bow like that. The boot does stretch as I tightened everything down but the edges don't bow like that.
The cup has raised edges to seal against the edges of the inner ring, so its the right way. I guess the boot has just warped from age and will need to be replaced. It bows even when not installed. Thanks for the help, everyone.
