Tranny issue...shifting difficulty for 1-3-5 when cold
Anyone have any idea what may be causing the transmission to be difficult to shift into the 1-3-5 gears when cold? The 2-4-6 gears are easy when cold. Also once tranny is warmed up all gears are easy to shift into.
BTW tranny fluid gets changed out about every two years with the last one being done about a year ago.
Typical performance, UNLESS you use synthetic fluid, which shifts much better when cold.
But a word of warning, if you have a 1997-2000 C5, you need to use Amsoil Torque fluid, or you will destroy your paper blocker rings (it takes more than 50,000 miles to destroy them).

Thanks!
Try shifter adjustment first. Also, if the shifter base bushing is deteriorated, it could cause shifting issues too.
Most report (and my experience with my CTS-V which was my daily driver from 06-09) was that a good synthetic such as this helps a lot: AMSOIL Torque-Drive Synthetic Transmission Fluid (Product Code ATD1G)
That is the same fluid I run in my 02 Z06 at the track, but in my case, my fluid is always warm given I warm my oil for about 15 minutes before going out on the track and with headers, no cats and racing mufflers mounted right under the tranny, the tranny warms up nicely before I go out on the track.
Yes it's a '97 tranny and yes I've been using Mobil 1 ATF for the past 10yrs...which works out to be about 30,000 miles ago since using it.
First thing i thought of when this problem surfaced was the paper blocker rings...but wasn't sure if that was the REAL issue.
I first changed to Mobil 1 ATF, then after 35,000-50,000 miles (I could check for exact mileage), my 1998 trans started grinding going into 5th and 6th gear. I changed to Amsoil Torque Drive and it stopped immediately. I know of at least one other early C5 that had the transmission destroyed by Mobil 1.
CHANGE FROM MOBIL 1 AND YOUR PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED.
