CF! Wanted to run this by you more seasoned owners. I called the dealership to see how much it would be for a "Tune-up" on my 2000 C5, Automatic with 110000 miles. Was told that Plugs, PCV, and fuel filter would be 1012.00 and this was not including wires. Was told that OEM wires would be 198 and the AC/Delco would be 118.00. So total for this so called "Tune-up" would be over 1k. Please give me your thoughts because I am stretching with my running shoes on…thanks!
jumping jesus on a pogo stick run away as fast as you can.
GMPP wires from GMpartshouse.com are like 50 bucks (around) get NGK TR55 plugs at 2 bucks each. fuel filter is like 50 bucks, and PCV is like 5. Change everything yourself. it will take about an hour to do the plugs and you will skin your knuckle on the AIR tube, you will need jack stands for the fuel filter and a 5 dollar tool from autozone.
Unbelievable! About $150 worth of parts. Get yourself a service manual, invest in some tools if you don't have them already. You can do it. Pretty easy stuff.
where are you located? That should be under 500 bucks
I am located in Annapolis, MD and the quote came from the dealership in Bowie MD. I kind of figured the quote was drastically overpriced but from reading the responses it would be a brutal screwing! I know that I can do it but the only thing is getting to the plugs. I may just have to get out there and go for it!!!! Thanks for all of the responses and answers. Need more forum members here in my area…LOL
Don't walk away, run! Seriously, tell them that's a flat out ripoff and you can and will take your business somewhere else, plus you'll tell everyone you know locally to stay away from their business.
I just bought super conductor wires , plugs , for an 04 and the parts were about $110 and plan on doing it myself , so if it takes me 2hrs that's fine , I agree with above , buy a few tools and do it yourself , great way to learn a bout your car. Ron
He can get you everything you need. For GM performance wires, plugs, fuel filter and PVC, i paid right at 130 bucks. took me about 6 hours total start to finish. you will need to know how to jack up the back of your car to do the fuel filter but all of the information you need is on this forum with step by step pictures. for comparison, the labor on a new clutch install for me was just a few hundred more than what they quoted you for plugs and wires. what you need to do however is tell the wife it costs that much, do it yourself and pocket the rest.
A little tip if you do it yourself. The left rear plug will be much easier with the AIR tube out of the way. When I pulled the hose off mine it broke off as the heat had made it brittle. Mine has 71k on it so can't imagine yours will be any better. You may want to go ahead and order a new hose section. The rearmost piece can be bought separate for about 20 bucks from GM.
I got a set of Autolite Pro Series wires from Rock Auto that looked the same as the originals. They had a closeout price of $17.
I gotta say that I'm in the autobody bussiness and everyone needs to make a profit....but that's insane!
I'm sure you can find a good local station to do this and just specify you want GM parts or better yet supply the parts and pay labor only.
I would say they will hit you with 3 hours labor. I would say the book gives them a hour for the fuel filter, 1.5 for plugs, and a half for PCV.
