I recently installed a WOTBOX 2step for drag racing, which comes with a connection for 1 LED shift light which flashes at whatever RPM is set, I have it hooked up in the drivers side window defog vent in the A pillar, its a blue LED but it just isn't in my line of sight for daytime racing, i'm not really in favor of drilling or cutting my dash to install the LED, but I did notice the Highbeam indication on the gauge cluster is very prominent in the center right in the line of sight. So my plan is to take the cluster out and pull it apart and remove the old incandesent light and replace with the LED and wire it in parrallel to the WOTBOX, it should still function as the highbeam light and flash when reaching shift rpm... Has anyone tried anything like this before?
Ok i got the cluster out and the highbeam light is very accessible, i found the best way to do this was the leave the highbeam light and add the shift led, i did with by drilling a small hole beside the highbeam bulb to allow the led wires out of the hole beside the bulb, i wired the LED to the serial cable to use with my WOTBOX, heat shrunk the wires. took the highbeam bulb out, moved the bulbs conductive plastic out of the way, got the led in the hole and routed the wires out the hole i drilled, then reinstalled the highbeam bulb to keep the led in place.
these pics should make it a little more clear.
i'll try to get a video up showing the light in action soon.
For anyone who would like to try this, here is a link to the wiring instructions for the LED. You just need an LED and an old serial cable. It plugs into the connector on the side of the box.
I was wondering if it would be bright enough to see as well but I guess you get accustomed to it. I know I can see the factory shift indicator pretty easy now and it almost seems to come up slow now that Ive gotten used to it.
