Default TRUNK LATCH won't work 2000 vert.

A 2000 vert.
Actuator responds both to dash trunk release button as well as the key FOB.
But the trunk lid does not open.
Makes a high pitched screeching, grinding sound.
I opened the trunk manually and removed both pieces from the rear trunk wall mount.
When I press the FOB, a small cylindrical rod moves horizontally.
However, from what I can see , it seems the rod does not slide a sufficient distance in it's allotted space. I believe this is the problem.
I was going to try to get replacement parts but I figured I should seek some advice first.
Additionally I am confused as to how any replacement lock parts will recognize the existing key FOB signal.
Any help would be appreciated.

You Need new ones their shot. Just when through this few mouths back. The gears are striped inside the mechenizam. Can't repair must change.Key fob has nothing to do with latch itself. Fob sends signal to pcm.

Thanks,I thought that was going to be the situation.
I tried to look up parts but I don't know the proper names.
Can you tell me what to look for.
I have one part with the lock and spring.
Another part with the actuator and rod.
What are they called properly?

Default latch

go to this site to see the part you need, # 16637654

http://parts.nalleygmc.com/products/.../16637654.html

A less expensive way is to call Mark Rose at Vette nuts and see if he has a used one. Great vendor and should be less than the $261 new
his # is 615 896 6100

Looking at the shop manual, the only procedure is to change the whole latch mechanism (just 2 bolts). That presumably is what a dealer would do.

If you cant strip down the latch and replace the parts with something from the local hardware store it looks like a new latch.

Let us know the outcome

If it's making a noise, I'd try a little lubrication before I replaced it.

If it's just the solenoid section and not the actaul latch mechanism itself, you can replace just that portion of the assembly. Eckler's, for one, sells the trunk solenoid (w/emergency release cable) for about $40.00 or so.

After all the help, I am sure the problem is with the solenoid piece.
I never knew that the latch mechanism was available in separate parts.
As usual, the Forum guys are spot on !
Thanks for the info.

This is an update on installation.
Prior to learning that the solenoid part was able to be purchased separately. I bought a new, never installed total latch mechanism--lock and release spring part plus the solenoid part.
Paid $105 including shipping.{ was not OEM--a knock-off}
After installation I am very glad I bought the entire mechanism.
Having both units in hand I was able to compare.
With the new solenoid and the new spring and lock, the trunk popped open a full 1 to
1 and 1/2 inches upon release.
Switching out the old spring/lock part with the new solenoid, the trunk released only a very small 1/2 inch or less and you had to wiggle your fingers under the lid to open it.
The spring was obviously fatigued.
The total replacement of the new solenoid plus the new spring/lock part, makes things a whole lot easier
