I need your information as regards replacing the shocks on my 97 c5 which has only 27000 miles on it. Should this be done due to the age of the shocks? I am having trouble balancing new Firestone runflats. The most advanced Hunter balancer states that the tires are balanced and not out-of-round. I am still having some shaking at 75+. (These tires have now been balanced 5 seperate times.) I wonder if a front shock is weak allowing this vibration? Any thoughts?
Re: Time For Shock Absorber Replacement? (RedVetteMike)
It is possible to have a bad shock with only 27,000 miles, but I doubt that a new set of shocks will get rid of the vibration. If they have had all the balancing jobs on the same machine, go somewhere else and try to find a Hunter 9700 for a new balance job. The machine could be off.
Re: Time For Shock Absorber Replacement? (RedVetteMike)
Don't go buying shocks w/o finding some way to try them out. A buddy did the Hotchkis/Blistein Sports and finds the car way to harsh for his tastes and introduced some rattles, squeaks in his otherwise TIGHT vert.
Don't buy anything just because someone out here recommends it. Find out for yourself what "feel" your after.

Good advice Tom.
RedVetteMike:
Don't forget the brake rotors and wheel hubs as a possible source of unwanted vibration too (run out, etc). Also may be some lateral run out in the rims that needs to be checked for. While it's possible to have a bad shock at 27,000 miles, it's been my experience it's less likely some of the other things mentioned here.
Are you experiencing any unusual tire wear patterns such as "cupping"?
