Default P1416 AIR - Confusing Intermittent Problem - Help Please

My 1998 6-speed coupe recently granted me a glowing Check Engine Light, code P1416 AIR SYSTEM BANK 2.

Here's what has happened so far:

1. It came on after I had made a brief stop at the office, car was only parked, engine off, for 2-3 minutes. CEL came on shortly after starting engine and driving.

2. Drove home ~25mi with the CEL on. I looked up possible problems, didn't find anything strange or disconnected under the hood, and cleared the code.

3. Test drove it back/forth to work 50 miles today, 2 hours, no problems.

4. Then, I parked, engine off, at a coffee shop for 5 minutes and when I turned the car back on, the CEL and P1416 came back. Cleared it again and drove to a nearby restaurant for lunch.

5. After a 1-hour lunch, started the engine, and no CEL

6. Drove home, parked the car, turned off engine. Waited 30 sec, then tried turning back on. CEL & P1416.

So, it appear I'm getting a CEL, P1416 only when the car is parked for short periods of time. Any advice or suggestions on where to begin??

Thanks,
Brian

o3newjersey just posted a fix for that code. It seems that it is the passenger side air check valve. Rod

Super common problem. Do a search in the C5 Tech forum for P1416.

Thanks, been reading up the last couple days. Great info.

I was just wondering if anyone had the same "park-then-start" symptoms as I had described. I thought it was strange that the AIR cold-start system was throwing codes only when I was "hot-starting" the car.

Per the factory Service Manual, there are all kinds of conditions that have to happened for the AIR system to do a health check. It's not just at cold start-up. You're Bank 2 (passenger side) check valve is probably going out and you're getting intermittent P1416 codes thrown, and therefore see the CE light come on randomly.

When my AIR check valve was going out, I could be going down the highway at 70 mph and watch the dash and see the CE light suddenly appear, and the cause was the P1416 code.

Update:
Performed the passenger side AIR sensor cleaning and havn't gotten the CEL for a few weeks, and 300+ miles. Also replaced a very worn PVC elbow.

BUT, I do hear the AIR pump run for about 1-2 seconds whenever the car is at a stoplight. Really strange. To my understanding, this is a cold-start-only pump to help emissions. Any ideas?

Check with a scan tool, that can display real time operational data, to confirm that the A.I.R. pump is actually running after the warm-up period.
