Default '99-'2000 Steering Wheel Position Sensor

You can go into the diagnostics and erase the code for this problem and it will stay off for awhile. Do this just before you go to have it inspected and it should stay off long enough to pass inspection, usually about 20-30 miles. You can also push the reset button and the service vehicle soon will go out. It will come on each time you start the vehicle.

Sorry to kick a 12 year old thread.. but it has the most useful information I could find.
My 98' (without active handling) is throwing DTC code C1281. I've read dozens of threads about this..
I've checked the grounds.. I've checked the voltages and connections...
It seems the steering position sensor (GM PN 26055808) is bad.

The forum has evolved a lot in 12 years... Unfortunately, many of the photos from the original threads are gone (or were hosted on sites that are now gone)
As these posters found back in 2011, the part is out of production.

Here in 2023, it looks like that's still the case.. and all the 3rd party replacements parts are also gone.
So we have online vultures asking $500 for untested parts pulled out of junk yard cars.

Any other options? Has anyone successfully repaired or rebuilt one of these? Modify another part to work?

Thanks,
Fred

Try Marc Rose at Vettenuts. He tests his used units, and they come centered. New ones will probably never be made again
