Monster Stage 3
I have vararam, full exhaust and a 150 wet shot..The car sits on mickey thompson ET street Radials..I'm going to be picking up a ECS trans brace from one of my friends as well..
My friend had the stage 3 in his 600rwhp Z06 and said that in order to get a good launch off the car you had to Dump it hard otherwise it would bog.... I don't wanna have to dump the clutch and put that kind of stress on my rear end just yet..
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this clutch as far as a DD and drag raced frequently
It chattered enough to loosen a filling.
I blame a lot of it on the way the header pipe nuts would vibrate loose and just exacerbate the chatter.
This was "fixed" somewhat by replacing the header nuts with locking type.
Now it doesn't chatter nearly as much, but will.
It grabs like heck and is difficult to slip, but again, the V is 4k pounds.
I am replacing it with a twin disc.
My first Monster was a Stage 3.5 when they were out, with the chromoly flywheel (lighter weight one) and that was in my heads/cam/I&E 2005 GTO. I love the clutch, held super tight and did not chatter. I had it in for just over 10k miles, 1k of which I used as break in (I had heard proper break in was vital to these clutches at that time)
Sold the GTO and pull my mods out, put what I could in my Z06. Went to install the clutch and one side of the material was down to the rivets, the other side the outside edge was down to the rivets and the inside had plenty of life left. So no go on that.
I ended up talking to Monster about it, and they got me a Stage 3 disk, same material but in a 6 puck style. Have had that in my car for about 4k miles (10 months) and so far still great clutch.
My 3rd experiance is a friends F-body. He has 12k on his Stage 3, and for what ever reason, it looks like some of the material came loose from one of the pucks in 1 place and imbeded into the flywheel. (chromoly flywheel too) and that wore a groove into the rest of the material on the clutch. The other side is worn to the rivets too. Both the flywheel and the Presure plate had noticable wear on them, like a brake rotor would after 2 or 3 sets of pads without resufacing of the rotor. Granted those 12k miles were moderately aggressive.
I am still overal impressed with the Monster clutches. I still love mine and am satisfied with what I have. But with that said, I think I would rather have gone to a multi disk clutch now that I have a better game plan on my modifications and my wants out of a clutch.
I put a Mcleod Twin in my brothers 68 LS2 Camaro the same time I put the new stage 3 disk in my Z06, I love stop and go driving in the camaro more than the Z06, much smoother. Both cars have new GM slaves, New Tick Master cylinders, both are close in curb weight, but he has a stock LS1 flywheel, where I have the Chromoly. My car puts more power down too.
Sorry, I got long winded.
I do also experience the odd noise during clutch engagement sometimes. But a few spirited shifts and the noise goes away. Not sure if that's just the material they use, but it's something that's been observed.
It's not easy to launch the car for a "normal" start. It "shudders" if I try to slip the clutch a bit for a slow, smooth start. I've learned to simply let the car in front of me get a few car lengths head start before I launch the car. I let the clutch back until I feel it start to grab a bit then smoothly and firmly add power and then release the clutch all at once. Off I scoot without any drama.
