I replaced a leaky p/s rack with a rebuild from A1 Cardone and the new one leaks worse than the one it replaces. While there is a warranty for the part and I can get another A1 rack (but no help on the labor) is there any other rebuilder? I can't find anything other than the A1 Cardone brand. I've been told that there are no 'new' ones and AC/Delco no longer rebuilds these. Is that true? Am I stuck with A1 Cardone???

Check AC Delco 36-16516 They are listed on AC Delco's website for '99-'04 (not sure what's up on the '97s and '98s unless it's something to do with a MagnaSteer change/re-design, etc) This is a Delco reman unit.
RockAutodotcom shows this number available for $367.79 plus $100 core charge
Do a Google search on this Delco part number. A number of sources appear to have it. Prices vary widely. Seems AC Delco also shows part #36-9191 as a reman but the price is steep. Confusing.
Btw, I would NOT recommend A1 Cardone to my worst enemy. Their quality sucks.
Maybe call Gene at GMPartsHouse tomorrow or Bob at Fichtner Chev for more info.
thanks,
I sent Gene an email. I've tried several places that say they carry the AC Delco but the supply seems to have dried up. All the Ac Delco dealers listed for Dallas on the AC Delco site said they can only get Cardone.
I'll call Rock Auto tomorrow and hopefully hear from Gene.
I got mine rebuilt at TurnOne in MI. They rebuild racks for NASCAR. It was about $250. So far no leaks!
Did your installer flush your power steering system? It not, shame on them! You power steering fluid may have been contaminated with metal shavings/dirt. That could be the cause.

PM me if you want the procedure for flusing.
Excellent tip on Turn One. I was aware of their reputation regarding P/S pumps but not aware they had that service - rebuild/exchange, - on steering racks. I would definitely think they have the expertise.

If you try to buy from RockAuto, you find the Delco part is not available.
Gene confirmed that the Delco part is on backorder from GM with no availability date.
I am currently awaiting a response from TurnOne since they seem to be the ONLY alternative other than A1 Cardone or a non-rebuilt salvage or used part.

I bought one from a forum member out of a wrecked car he was parting out. The car was destroyed from the rear so the rack was good. Its just fine in mine now.
before you go replacing the rack again check your high pressure line, its ~15$ and was the only thing leaking on mine. I didnt discover the problem until I had already replaced the rack... it will leak right through the rubber hose.

I sent an e-mail request for more info today to a large reman company in Ohio. Their part number for this is 95455M and their application info shows: '97-'04 all models.
[Edit] Response:
"Hello,
We do not have any 95455Ms or cores available at this time."

Turn 1still rebuilds for $250. With shipping to and from and 10 to 15 business days for the work, it takes a month. We are trying one more Cardone. If/when it leaks, I'll send it to T1.

Are you positive it is your rack and not your high pressure line? The high pressure line will make a mess of everything and it looks like the rack is leaking.

Yep we are sure it's the rack. In fact, we can see it leaking when the engine is running and the steering wheel is turned. Believe me, we do NOT want to pull the rack if it can be avoided.

That's of some comfort at least. The price is very reasonable.

Well its got to eb easier the second time, I know I had to use everythign from pry bars to pipe wrenches to get mine out. The bushing on the passenger side was between 1/32 and 1/16 wider than the mount so it was a pain to get out. I ended up taking a grinder to it so that I could put the new rack in.
