Default Removing steering column with CLB. Position sensor an issue?

I'm replacing the entire steering column on a c5 equipped with a column lock bypass. I know you're supposed to lock the column before removal, but I obviously can't.

So, how much leeway do I have here? I mean, if the steering wheel turns a few hairs in one direction, will that throw off the orientation of the wheel position sensor/steering wheel???

Should I just immobilize the wheel by strapping it to something? Would that even help because at some point I'd have to unstrap it to pull the column off anyway (at which time it might turn)?

Great idea!

I've never actually tackled the steering column lock problem before, so I wasn't even aware that it was something that could easily be disconnected. This car already came "bypassed" from the previous owner. In fact, aren't there two methods for preventing the column from locking? The CLB, and some other one? I'm not sure how it was done here. It's a 99 A4, so I believe these came equipped w/ the lock from the factory.

Feel free to mention what/where I should look for.

I'll do some more searching as well...
