Could a stock air pump be used to draw crankcase vapors and vent them to a catch can, this way oil would never make its way into the intake manifold, or would the pump burn up since its not meant to run constantly, or should I just get a catch can and forget this idea?
This is a great idea. Use an air pump designed to scavenge oil not a stock A.I.R. pump which only sees exhaust gases.
I've seen that idea next best to a dry sump in a nissan engine pcv article on MotoIq. Also available here: http://www.enginebasics.com/Engine%2...ntilation.html
You may still have a problem in high G left turns though due to the pcv pickup points of the 98.
