While driving to work this morning my cruise kicked off (2003 M6). It then proceeded to do it again. When I glanced down at the DIC it said both Cruise Disengaged and Active handling Off. I hit the cruise resume and it started working again in both instances.
Sometimes the switch at the top of your clutch pedal will loose contact and prevent the cruise control from working. But this wouldn't account for your Active Handling also turning off. Sounds like a grounding problem or something in the BCM.
This is a symptom of the steering position sensor (SWPS) going out. Check your codes. If there are no codes, it does not rule ou the SWPS. With getting the Active Handling message, this partially rules out the clutch and brake switches.
I had a similar set of conditions with mine. Very intermittent took about a year to finally determine what the problem was. It was a 2.5 hour DIY repair. There is a good write up on how to replace. The SWPS is on the steering column at the firewall, the column has to be partially removed to replace the sensor.

I agree also check the "brake light switch circuit" Often is just the floormat affecting the brake or clutch pedal !!
I will pull the codes tonight.
The floor mats are clear of the petals and my foot was on the dead petal when it occured both times.
The SWPS is interesting, not looking forward to messing with the airbag.
