My SCed C5 has an aftermarket short throw shifter installed (Don't know brand but should tomorrow). Frequently, it refuses to go in reverse. I mean totally refuses (got me sent home from a Drag Strip a few weeks ago). Additionally, it seems to miss the shift from 2nd to 3rd about half the time. I figured this was all my doing but I let a buddy who is used to 6 speed manual corvettes drive it today - same problems, locked out of reverse a few times and misses 2nd to third frequently. What is a good aftermarket short throw shifter for 2004 C5, in fact, if you know whats the best tell me that? Thanks!! Could the problems be elsewhere?
I always had reverse problems in my 2000 Z28, a little less in my 02 Coupe, and now almost never in my 04 Z. I was told once, that the motor shifts a bit and to bump first and try again if it happens. That has always worked.
That said, your problems seem broader. I am running an RSD Snap Shifter bought here on the forum, which is a slightly modified C6 shifter.
have you tried to align the shifter? these things are pretty simple units and chances are it isnt the shifter itself but either the alignment of the shifter to the arm or the tranny itself. You said it was an aftermarket so chances are when it was installed the lever to the arm wasnt aligned properly.
Yes I can get it in reverse sometimes - it actually behaves sometimes all day long. I had it put on a lift today and the mechanic showed me the shifter was a Bubba self install. Also, someone tried to lift the car on a hoist and punched 4 holes in the fiberglass. I paid a dealer to inspect this car before I purchased it. No doubt in my mind that the holes in the fiberglass were there when inspected. I am beginning to think you can't trust mechanics.
I think it is time for pictures. How do you see the shifter from under the car? You have to get to the shifter from the inside. It is kinda hard to "bubba" the install. It is only 4 bolts. The busted fiberglass is common with a lift. that is why people use the lift pucks.
