I have a 99 C-5 that makes a tapping engine noise at start up until engine warms. I have had it to three dealerships in Colorado. A few astute technicians tell me it is a "piston over bore" problem with this engine, and many C-5's have it and Camaros. Fine, they say it causes no damage. Except to my ears! I am tired of sounding like a Diesel or an oil less engine starting up. The noise lasts until the engine warms up and or over about 2000 RPM. Can anybody tell me how they can get GM to fix it? From the recent forum I see some that have an oil burning problem additionally, have gotten new rings put in. Would that work for the noise, and how do I get GM to do it. My car is under warranty, but so far no dealer has helped me in how to get rid of the noise. Plz, somebody help.

Thanks for the reply, but have you pursued getting the noise fixed. I believe I have read on the forum (I am new to the forum) that those that had the noise and oil burning problem got a GM fix which was new and different rings. Do you know anything about this, or have you pursued a fix? How?
I also have the same problem with my 2001 Silverado and was told they were aware of the problem but were taking no action as it was determined not to be harmful to the engine. Any further information would be helpful.
And GM wonders why foreign automakers quality is better!! It is the voice of the customer that wins those awards, and if they do not fix something that is annoying to customers just because it does not harm anything, then it will show in raise their defects in the JD Power score. Oh well, maybe someday they will learn......

I have tried fixing it, but you might try taking it to a tuner shop and asking what they suggest. Bottom line is unles you're burning alot of oil they aren't going to do anything. Cheap fix is to get SLP loudmouths or something similar. You won't be able to hear anything over the exhaust
My '01 MN6 had new rings placed and both problems seem licked. However, the problem is only noticed when it is cold (ambient as well as engine temp). The car clearly had more piston slap when it was 15 degrees outside than when it was 70 degrees outside. A gm tech told me that it has more to do with the expansion properties of the aluminum block and the angle of the control arm to the piston. I don't have any reason to doubt this.
I figure, so long as the noise doesn't worsen and doesn't negatively impact the engine's longevity...then I reckon I can deal with it.
