I have an 02 6 speed and about a minute after I start the car up a chattering sound develops. It continues as I drive it, it only dissipates if I press in the clutch. I thought it might be the belts so I replaced those, also replaced the belt tensioner and idler pulley. I have read through the forum and everything I read doesn't seem to quite fit my situation. Thanks for any advice.
34,500 miles on it and it had a slight chattering when I bought it, but the owner said it was just the belt. After I had headers and a vararam installed and had it dynoed/tuned, the chattering became much worse.

I found this info. on the corvetteaction center website (2 different posts):
"For what it's worth I had the same exact problem on my 99, went to a local gm dealer and what it boiled down to was rust that had built up on the edges of the pully's, belt's were fine but got replaced anyway and pully's cleaned up.. quiet as a mouse! P.S. no slipsumeasy used at all on belts"
I noticed that the big metal pulley at the bottom is rusty, would that really make a loud chattering noise like I am experiencing?
"There is a tsb (technical service bulletin) on this issue. I had it fixed accordingly years ago. I had to bring the tsb that I printed out myself to the dealer. The bolts on the tensioner need to be torqued to a specific poundage or something warps and creates the noise. The tech can't use an air tool, must use a hand held torque wrench. Also GM redesign the part that was warping and that needs to be installed as well. This was years ago and this is the best I can recollect but the noise drove me nuts and I finally did the research and found the solution. Not many people, even dealerships know about it.
Does anyone know about this bulletin, and what the tensioner needs to be torqued to, and what part was warping? The post was about two years old. Did some more research and found the bulletin (TSB #99-06-01-007), but it only seems to refer to 1997-1999 vettes. As a side note, I bought my new tensioner and idler pulley from gmparts house, so the parts I used are genuine GM parts.

Problem solved-put on a gatorback belt and noise is totally gone- think the power steering pully was slightly misaligned, so the gatorback must have compensated for the problem. And this was a very loud, annoying, and embarassing sound.
