I took my '99 FRC to Goodyear for 2 new tires and an alignment. The mechanic takes the LF wheel off and spots a "crack" on the crossmember parallel to the floor, just below the sway bar. They say it's dangerous to drive. It is a casting seam, but maybe it could be a crack too. The area looks a little banged up. The other side has the same casting seam. Anyone ever heard of this ? The car has been driven hard, 30k miles with over 1k on the track.

You are talking about that aluminum cross member where the lower A arm is fixed too? A similar one is in the back? OK
Take this part very serious! Try to get a simple crack check to see if it is really a crack. If it is, do not drive anymore. Get a new one mounted.
I´m in that business of these parts here at mercedes (S, C, SL Class got this part too), I even got one of the vette parts in my office.
These parts are never allowed to have cracks. The growing of crack happens very fast, faster than in steel, so the part can fail suddenly.
Keep us informed.
