Thinking about doing straight pipe after the cats and taking off the mufflers and adding tips. Basically a custom bullet-like system... Will I lose or gain time at the quarter mile track? Thanks vettes!
I know a guy that just had his car('98 LS1 with a cam, headers and LS6 intake) on the dyno. He has cutouts. He said he got 10 more hp with the cutouts open. His cutouts are right before the rear axle. Take it for what it's worth.
I ran straight pipes for a while and didnt really notice any difference in power untill I put headers on the car. After a few months I put Z06 Ti's on and noticed I picked up a fair amount of low end torque with the mufflers vs straight pipes. I was unable to get into 6th gear at 50 without laboring the engine and had to wait till almost 60 now I can put in in 6th at almost 45...
I just put my Borla straights on from Maryland speed this weekend and I love it but it is VERY VERY loud. Crusing at 70 I cant even tell theres no mufflers but anything other than that you wont be talking to anyone in the car or able to hear your own thoughts. I also had fitment issues and I am working with borla to get them resolved. All that being said I love it; it isnt my daily driver so the noise doesnt bother me once I get some headers on I might have to give up the straight pipes but we will see.
I run the Borla straight pipes during tracking season (35lbs lighter) and Bassani during the winter. I have a dyno run with Bassanis but not with Borlas, so when I get a chance to get on dyno, I will post comparison. BTW, this is what the Borlas sound like at CMS at 150+ and empty grandstands:
I have Billy Boat bullet quad tip on my 97, it sounds awesome and is quality stuff. It was dyno tested in a vette magazine and added 14 rwhp. Good money spent.
