Default fuel pressure regulator location?

Ok, so I've been reading, and it seems that thruout the c5 lifespan, GM decided to change the location of the FPR not once, but twice....with perhaps the original setup actually being the best.

Locations:
1st c5s: FPR on fuel rail
2nd: in the fuel tank?
3rd: in line, a fuel filter/FPR combo installed on frame rail under car.

So, I have a 2002, so it should be the 3rd choice....BUT, I have a FPR on the fuel rail crossover line over my ls6 intake. Im guessing someone swapped this FPR (or added it ) to remove this restriction on the stock later model c5's.

I wanna make sure, as I've heard that no matter what you throw at a fuel issue (bigger pump, injectors, hotwire kit, boost a pump, etc), it may not help or be necessary until the stock restriction is removed (restrictive FPR not mounted on fuel rail)

Thanks for any input y'all have

Specifically, 97-98 on the rail, 99-early 2003 on the frame rail, 2003-2004 in the tank.

You either have an aftermarket FPR, someone installed a 97-98 rail, or you are assumming what you see on your 2002 rail is a FPR, and did not even bother to look at the frame rail location for the filter/regulator.

Ok, your order timeline makes more sense....I was going off what I was reading on another members post. I know I didn't find one in the pump assembly when I swapped fuel pumps.

No, I haven't looked under the frame rail yet.....anything doing with the bottom of this car seems to get held off until I have a few good hours to work with it and other things to service under there. And to think I wanna lower another inch.

If you have 2 lines going to the fuel rail you have a 97/98 rail with a FPR.
If you only have 1 line going to the fuel rail what your looking at is a pulse damper not a regulator.

I only have one fuel line to the rail, so it must be a pulse damper.....which is I term I've never heard before.
