Is there away to manually turn on the fans with a switch and a relay. Does anyone know the wires to use to turn the fans on with a switch and a relay. It seems that the fan controllers are nothing more than a relay and wires for a lot of money.
Yes. I have done this. It is very easy and costs $5-10. You can turn on the high speed fan whenever you want. I did this awhile ago and will need to go dig some things up. I will try and post the deatails on it tomorrow.
I turn my fans on at a lower temperature by having installed a $20. Hayden fan temperature switch. This unit comes with an adjustable temperature switch and a 3 foot capilary tube with bulb on the end. You can stick the bulb between the radiator fins or lay it on top of the core like me. I can't remember the fuse numbers for the fans in the under-the-hood fuse box, but refer to your owners manual. You can verify by pulling the fuse and sticking a 12 volt jumper wire into the fuse hole. I chose a light blue wire directly under the fuse under the fuse panel to jump into the fan circuit as the fan plugs seemed hard to get to. For 12 volt power, I found a fairly large orange wire under the fuse panel that is only hot when the engine is running. This is your power source. I tapped into this with a pigtail from a 25 amp inline fuse, then ran a length of wire to the Hayden thermo switch. Another wire runs back under the fuse panel and conneects with the light blue wire. When the Hayden thermo switch closes, 12 volts is supplied to the fan circuit. The Hayden switch is adjustable and should be set 10 to 15 degrees F above your thermostats advertised temperature. My modified stock thermostat wants to hold 183 F and the fans come on at 195F. They stay on until the temperatue drops to 185 F. You'll have to run your engine watching the temperature gage and the fans while adjusting the Hayden to get it set right. :yesnod:
I purchased the Hayden fan controller at discount today. It seems pretty easy to do but I can locate the wires to hook to the fans. I tried removing the fuse box to get to the wires underneath but it doesnt seem possible because the wires are so short you cant get enough clearance to turn the fuse box over to see the wires. I thought of hooking to them at the fans. Is there anyone that knows where to get these wires besides the fuse box and at the fan. I think I could do it at the fan but not sure what color wires since they are in tubing. Does someone know the colors of the wires for each fan.
The fuses and relays in the under-the-hood electrical box are on a "board" on top of the box, just under the cover. This board can be unhooked and pulled out a little, but you're right the wires are shot and there isn't much room to work, but it can be done. The first hard thing to do is matching the blue wire underneath with the relay connection on top. Then you have to reach in and scrape away insulation so splices can be made. I soldered my splices and then covered them with silacone RTV and electrical tape to seal them. Just pull the top panel out of the way as far as it will go and tie it so it doesn't spring back. :yesnod:
I installed the fan controller today. It works but it is a fixed temp of 185 degrees which to me was fine but it is turning on at around 194 when I am idleing and now it is turning off at 196 then back on at 194 and so on. When I am driving the car is runing around 187 which is good I think.
So the temp is not quite right, Any ideas? Also the fans only work with the car on even if I have the key on it wont work car has to be running. I tapped it the blue wire in the fuse box maybe that has something to do with it.
By the way the fan controller cost me only $24.99. Discount auto also has a completely adjustable unit for $39.99. Easy install too. No need to spend $149.00 or more for a Fan controller.
