My 1998 Corvette has a slow leak in the A/C compressor? To replace will cost about $1100. How can I add coolent so that it will last a little longer? Did not want to spend the money now.
You can buy cans of freon at lots of car parts places.. or Walmart.. They are about $20
and you just read the instruction.. Should take you about 5 minutes to do the job.. Pretty easy... I'd wear gloves.. If the freon leaks onto your hands it's pretty cold!
Are you sure it's the compressor and not the plumbing?
The reason I ask is because when I fired up the A/C on my Nissan this spring, I got nothing but warm air. My original thought was also that the compressor was bad, but it was actually one of the fittings in the plumbing that had leaked. It was about a $200 part instead of much more.
You'll need to put new fluid and some dye in it to see where it's actually leaking. It'll give you A/C for a while if it's a slow leak.
I had a pretty good freon leak on my chevy blazer I was going through a can every 3 months, this is the freon with leak sealer in it too..I finally decided on the repair kit.. The auto parts store sells a leak repair kit for around $30.. That was just over 3 years ago.. Its been blowing ice cold air with no problems whatsoever here is what I used
Mine had the same problem I finally found the valve where you plug in the a/c gas hose goes in was loose and that was my problem for years.it looks like the air valve on the tires.
put in a can of the stuff with the uv reactive dye so you can spot the leak. you have to make sure you know what is leaking first. If the compressor is going bad, you can do it yourself for around 700 including all the tools you will need to buy.
