Search for "flip tie mod" or "zip tie intake" and you'll find a DIY method of making the equivalent of a Callaway Honker intake. All you really need is a K&N filter.
I have the Volant dual cone setup and I am quite pleased with it. The quality is excellent especially the filters. The fit is perfect and the price is pretty good. They also make a nice sound under acceleration, almost turbo-like. Since you have a Z06, your bumper screens already allow fresh air into the air intake so you're all set. I needed to open up that area and add the Z06 screens on my C5.
I have the Blackwing but like most CAI units, they perorm better if you make a better provision for direct outside air, similar to the Honker and Vortex Rammer.
I hooked up a Scan Gauge II after installing the honker, and the IAT (intake air temps) always read within a degree or 2 of the outside ambient air temperature, so I know it's doing what it's supposed to do (suck in "cool" or "ambient" air into the engine).
I wish I would have had the Scan Gauge prior to installation to compare the intake air temps with a non-cold-air intake.
The honker works great though, and is well worth the money if you ask me!
i have heard the vararam was the only tru cai, is that true?
A lot of them call themselves cai, but only Honker, VR, I think BP Products has one are the only true cold air intakes. The rest use the ambient air from engine bay. Those are probably better than stock, but they are not true cai.
I have this MTI honker knockoff for $230 shipped. This a true cold air intake just like the Honker except you don't have to cut your shroud. Comes with power duct, filter, clamps and couplings and precut shroud. You get to save your shroud and can go back to stock when you get rid of car. Will not work on my car due to oil cooler.

It is boxed and ready to ship. Let me know if anyone is interested.
Honestly - The Callaway is the best CAI. BUT not everyone wants to spend that much. You could do the ziptie mod for practically free of charge - I ended up going with the Blackwing. I have a H/C/I + Full Exhaust setup and the Blackwing has been nothing but a performer for me. They are inexpensive, easy to install, easy to clean, and they get you results. That's my .02

I used a scan gauge after I installed my Blackwing and modified my shroud and my results were pretty on par with yours. I will say that NO aftermarket induction system will work effeciently without outside/ambiant air coming into the engine bay. And the brake cooling ducts in the front bumper arent going to cut it unless you have a Vararam.
