I have a cousin out of state that I let borrow my vette (yeah he's lucky). He got me tickets to the 500, sat at turn 4 awesome.
Anyway, he just called me. COLUMN LOCK!!! The car is a 97 mn6. He says the steering wheel will turn freely. The car will start but as soon as he lets the clutch out the car dies!!! At first the DIC said remove key for 10 secs then restart. He's done this but still nothing!!!
The dic says "Sevice column lock"
PLEASE ADVISE what do we do in order for him to get this car home....its at a video store!!!!
HELP.....I cant BELIEVE this has happened I thought i'd be alright after 6 years!!!
The key has a resistor built into it. Looking at the key, it is about half an inch long. Sounds like the car is in the anti-theft mode. Take some rubbing alcohol or other cleaner and clean the resistor. The resistor is about 2/3 up the key toward the big end. Hope this helps.
Pull BCM1 fuse #25 at the passenger footwell and reinstall...He will be good to go ;) The column is stuck in the unlocked position and doing the fuse trick will reset the BCM...
Flat bed it to the nearest chevy dealership and have them install the lock bypass. Mine locked up on me several times before installing this and I hade to put the A/C on full blast at 60 degrees for a minute or two, without starting the car, shutting off and then starting the car while turning the steering wheel fiercely. It worked all four times.
