Why different head gaskets??
Just curious as to why there are different head gasket part numbers from GM for different year engines? Were they changed for differances on the blocks or the heads? Do you base your head gasket selection on your block or the heads being used?

97/8, perimeter bolt heads(forgot the pn?) (warning in GM tech data on 'notch casting' when using later style head gaskets......although some have used MLS)
99,00, 853 heads
01-04 241 heads
01-04 Z06 only, 243 heads
2002(maybe some late 2001's?) was the start of the beloved GM MLS gasket
The 2002up part number(pn) is 12589226........but order the 12498544 as the 44pn comes as a pair of gaskets and will run about $40(pair)
You'll also notice the Corvette GM MLS head gaskets are used on the 5.3HO truck motors, it's stamped 5.7/5.3HO on every GM MLS head gaskets I have seen for the LS1/6 block
Head bolts changed in 2004, all x10 per side(M11 bolts) are now the 'short' bolts
