I had the well-known chirping sound from the accessory drive belt. I replaced the idler pulley (TSB #99-06-01-007). The chirp went away for 3 days - now its back :( .
specified torque of the mounting bolt is 37 lb ft. Couldn't get a torque wrench in there, but I'm pretty sure it is not over-torqued.
My 2001 has an appetite for serpentine belts and idler pulleys. I'm on my third pair of both (original and then replaced twice, last was in July 2001). I've noticed a little 'noise' from that area and suspect the belt is getting ready to retire again.
I don't think the engine should have such an appetite for serpentine belts and pulleys...
Yes, I had about 2 months worth of fun tracking the noise down. I replaced the idler pulley twice, the tensioner pulley twice and went through about 5 belts of all different brands. Sometimes it would fix it for a couple of days up to a week, and others it wouldn't fix it at all! It turned out to be the runout on the harmonic balancer/pulley. It had a very slight wobble, therefore the chirping sound and the wearing out of the drive belt! The dealer replaced it about 2 months ago and I haven't had any problems since!
