is it reading now? if it is showing an accurate reading it is fine although they will be inconsistent when starting to fail...it shows XXX when its dead

Yes. It's reading now but I'm not getting the same pressure values from the DIC as I am from my digital tire pressure gauge. What should I trust ? The car or the gauge ? Is the TPMS considered to be very accurate ?
