on a 98, MN6 convertible. Think I have a bad one and can't do this job myself. Any idea how much a reputable vette dealer would charge for this? :cry

 

What makes you think the crank pulley is defective?

Keep in mind that the LS1 crankpulley is NOT a crank balancer. It is a harmonic balancer used to dampen the belt vibrations. I have the stock balancer off of my LS1 you can have for $50.00. Installation would cost around $300 to $400. You need to remove the steering rack to access the pulley.

Thanks; the dealer told me the harmonic balancer had "blown apart" and had also created a small hole in the oil pan and the serpentine belt was bad also. Just going by what they said. Told them to wait 'till I got back with them b/4 they do anything.

 

Had to have mine replaced, Chevy charged about $400.00 including parts

 

Remember that any stock pulley will have to be balanced as part of the installation.

Best bet would be to get an Under-Drive Pulley installed. Since you have to get it installed anyway the difference in parts would be about $150.

Cheap for 8-10 rwhp.

BTW: I got my pulley installed for about $250. Make sure they know what they are doing and how to properly torque/stretch the "new" bolt on. I'm talking about both the dealer tech or any other shop.

What were the symptoms that were created by the defective harmonic balancer? I have a very fine vibration that went away for a while when the alternator was replaced w/ a new one w/ decoupler pulley, new tensionerand serpintine belt. After 2500 miles it's back and very annoying. Any input appreciated.

I had just pulled out of the driveway and had driven about 2 blocks when I heard this knocking/tapping sound. At first thought it was a sticky lifter, since I only drive the car on the weekends. Got a bit louder... I stopped...opened the hood and could tell the sound was coming from down around the crank pulley (harmonic balancer). Shortly after that, I noticed a bit of smoke from the same area. I immediately drove it home, called the dealer and had it flat-bedded to the dealer. They told me the balancer had "flown apart", runined the serpentine belt and punctured the oil pan, even though I hadn't notice any large leaks in the garage. They told me today they would probably have to pull the engine to replace the pan. OUCH! Thank goodness for the GM extended warranty! Have no idea how much this would have cost me. Didn't really notice any vibration, though.

Also, if you're still reading this, I had noticed a high pitched whine for a few weeks before this happened. Not sure if this is related to the problem or not. Guess we'll find out once we get her back.

Gary, I live in St. Peters and bought the vette at Elco. Took her back there. I have heard they do good vette work. Any suggestions? They told me they have already ordered the parts. Think they will/can get an "Under Drive Pulley? Thanx! :cheers:

Squeaky belt noise, when you look at a shifted pulley you can see it wobbling

 

Sure enough....checked on the vette today and the crank pulley had actually shifted BACK towards the block and wore a grove in the front block plate! Dealer said he had never seen anything like this B/4. The crank pulley was mis-aligned by about a 1/4" from the other pullies. Actually wore a hole in the oil pan as well.

Anyone ever heard of anything like this b/4? :eek:
