Default Regarding Low Oil Warning?

I have 5600 miles on my 2002 Vette and i changed the oil at about 500 miles and again at 1250. I haven't changed it since. But my low oil light came on and i checked and sure enough it was down to add..........NORMAL or what?

There was a oil consumption problem with some '00 and '01 vettes but that should have been taken care with the change in piston rings for '02.

If you run the engine hard, it wouldn't be too shocking that some oil would get consumed. However, hitting the add mark on the dip stick is another story. Maybe some other '02 owners will chime in.

Be thankful that your light came on when you had that much oil. I had my oil "changed" at the dealer and about 500 miles later I got the low oil light. Checked it out and you know how much oil I had in the pan? Just a film on the bottom and whatever was in the filter. Engine has run for crap since then.

-My '98 Coupe takes 6.5 quarts of oil to fill (with tail up).

-Low oil light comes on at 5.5 quarts or less (I checked it one oil change while filling it up).

I have a 2001 C5 with a little over 12,000 miles. I started experiencing the low oil warning after about 5,000 miles and since then have consumed a quart of oil about every 2,000 mile. There is a GM directive out #01-06-01-023 on ring replacement for higher than expected oil consumption. If the problem continues go to the dealer. You may get the run around from the dealer, but they should make good as there is no reason for oil use on this new an engine. I will be getting new rings in June.

It looks like you used a quart of oil in 4K miles which is better than most C5s that I have heard. Your consumption may well drop as you continue to break in the engine. My 2001 used a little oil in the first 10K miles, less in the next 10K miles, and even less in the third 10K miles. My last add was after 7K miles of driving so I am very pleased with my engine's oil consumption. I use Mobil 1 5w30 as per GM specs and I take long highway trips so I don't do a lot of high RPM driving and tend to use higher gears for steady cruising. :flag

My 427 TT last Monday did about a500 mile jaunt and met some folks and did quite a few jaunts to 200 mph got the oil to 253 deg with large oil cooler. At 1/3 Qt. down my low oil kept coming on.I stopped and added a 1/3 Qt. no help addede another 1/3 and warning ceased.Who do you trust DIC or dip stick.Lpe usses a 99 stick but I think I awapping to an F- body stick my car has a high volume low pressure pump, when its AZ. hot I never see more than 19 PSI at idle and as low as 15 at 220+deg temp,at idle.
When cold 50-60 psi when warm at 2500 rpm in 5th on hi-way 29 psi.Changing out sending unit FRI. If no change KA-Tech pump if no change I have to look at bearings but this C5R is built by Ed at LPE and no one is flawless but I would say he builds the best motor in the biz and this isnt my 1st.Dave S.
