I have a 2001 convertible that I have been working on for the last year or so to get it back into decent daily driver shape. I bought it new and now have 149,000 on the odometer. I have replaced the radiator, a/c compressor, flywheel, repaired the dim hvac among a bunch of other things learned from this forum. Now having a problem with the rear end. When accelerating hard I will sometimes get a thump in the rear that feels like a tooth is missing off of a cog. sometimes this will happen more than once most often one thump and done. If I accelerate gently the problem will not happen. Reading thought Pewter99's ultimate DIY/FAQ thread post #32 he speaks about a popping rear end fix. Is this what I am experiencing? The fix looks straight forward but I don't want to start taking things apart unnecessarily.
yes that is the fix I was talking about. If it is fixing a ticking sound then that is not what I need. My problem literally sounds like a tooth is missing from a wheel and it is spinning to catch up with the missing tooth. Thank you for the input.
You might want to look real good to see if any of your exhaust pipes have been making contact with the bottom side of the car, especially in the area where the pipes cross over the axles & towards the rear from there.
Look carefully for "Witness Marks".
I have about an hour before my granddaughter wakes up so Im going to put it up on ramps and see what I can see. thanks for the pointers. Have a good weekend. If I see ''witness marks" Ill post back.
It could be the posi clutches sticking when cold. Get some limited slip additive and put that in the rear end. That fixed my Z06 that was doing the same thing.
