I have commented on the 'tinted clear coat' issue on several occasions, it is used in both the mil. yellow and mag red, it is my understanding that the tinted clear coat is NOT available. This is what I have been told, as a result, I was told it is impossible to TRULY 'panel-match' a mil. yellow or mag red car it must be 'blended' into surrounding panels. A great body shop guy can get it where only an expert can tell I guess, but according to the info I recv. on the many trips down to BG the tinted clear is unavail. By the way, most body shops guys just look at you funny when you mention the 'tinted' clear, they seem to have NO idea what you are talking about, kinda sad.... Anyone care to chime in here.... Your thoughts are appreciated, I share the same concerns as mello here...
Agree. But you know how GM shnookers us too. I've heard everything from the extra cost is due to emissions fees to whatever. I've heard they use a cheaper lighter coat of yellow, followed by a tinted yellow clear, then a clear and GM saves money painting it that way by precisely controlling the amount of paint and how little is used.
I've heard that applying more Mill Yellow then the factory, then a clear coat ends up better but costs more in materials and that's how aftermarket does it.
I do know that the orange peel is eliminated. Hard to know 100%. Most Mill Yellow owners seem happy with the results tho.
I might do the whole car. Anyone know how much an entire paint job should cost?
The tinted clear is available. It was put on my quarter panel.
Do you have the part number for this?
Someone also said GM uses a waterborne paint process that can't be duplicated by body shops for whatever reason.
Not sure if the tint helps with a light cost saving thin coat of M.Y. over top and it isn't necessary for a nice thick M.Y. coat that uses a regular clear coat. Dunno.
