I just picked up new rims and tires, all OEM sizes. Old rim , chrome flaking etc. So I want to take the old TPMS from old rim and place on new rim, is there any way to test the battery in the TPMS. I have a 2000 with only 19,000 miles, any thoughts ?
I have a 2001 and I decided to go ahead and get new TPMS's along with my new tires ($160 for 4 new Delco units). I probably didn't have to do it but a lot of my research seemed to imply a battery life of 10 to 15 years and they were 11. I don't think there is a way to determine the remaining life on an old unit but if there is I would like to know too.
This is the best you can do. It will only tell you that they work, though. As tigtorch mentioned age is the most common metric used and anything over 10 years is probably not worth messing with unless you are just selling the car.
With a 2000 you have a special problem though (I also have a 2000), the TPMSes are more expensive ($100 ea OEM). I have heard of some non-Delco ones being cheaper but don't know anything about that. Tigtorch's own TPMS post has a link to an insane deal on the old-style TPMSes on eBay.
EDIT: Here is the eBay auction...http://www.ebay.com/itm/280919827822 It almost hits "too good to be true" territory but the seller has good feedback and comes recommended by K-Spaz.
If you feel like going the OEM route and would like some nice new key fobs while you are at it, GMPartsHouse has the upgrade kit, 2004 TPMS radio, 4 TPMS, 2 fobs, for $400 all-up. Requires soldering/wire nuts but that is it.

Reason: added link
Thanks all for the feedback, I have learned in last few days of the extra cost for 2000 year....figures right. Think I will go to the upgrade.
What am I soldering, you mentioned in the last post ?

My aftermarket one works just fine and was around 40 bucks.

You can also wire-nut it, I actually did that, soldering is recommended. It's three wires, you have to cut up the old wiring harness and solder/nut the new one in. The whole job isn't too bad, you have to pull down this taped-in piece in the back driver's side of the car (piece of cake on a coupe you just have to pull hard). Then everything is right there.
I also do not know where people are getting them for $40, I think that is awesome. However I already did the upgrade. I hear the newer ones can be found for less than the GM rate of $40 each, also. Need the cheap TPMS hookup.
Nice thing about the new TPMS is the new key fobs, they work better and IMO look a little nicer.
High Wire - where did you get them aftermarket, contact info if you would, thanks
Call Tire Rack. I got mine for my 2000 from them. It was not listed on their web site but when I called they had them. Sorry I do not have the invoice but seem to recall they were in the $50-$60 range a piece. Found their box and it had a part number of 28006.
Rock Auto is running a closeout on Schroeder ~110 for all 4 including shipping after the holiday I will replace all. One is dead another is giving me a 0 psi reading the other two will not program, so all will go.
