Default Getting a new key

Hi all,

Was wondering what is the cost/process like for getting a new key for a 2000 C5 Coupe? I only have one and it looks like it was taped to the tire tread for a Nurburgring lap (beat to hell). I am worried one day that chip is going to give out, or I'll just lose the key, and I'll be stuck.

i bought keys on ebay had them cut locally... you need a ohm meter to tell what blank you need..........cost approx 7.00 for key

Oh so the chip is just a resistor? So I just measure across the key body and that little terminal on the top I am guessing. Well, that would be awesomely easy.

Yes, it's simply a resistor. Time to break out the multimeter and take your findings to a good local locksmith. That's what I did, ended up being under $20.

Check out this thread for resistor values and also a handy trick if you don't want to deal with it ever again.

You can also go to any decent locksmith and have a couople of keys made while you wait, as long as you have one key for him to duplicate. Lose your only key and then it gets much more difficult.

You're not measuring across the key body itself, just the small metal contact strip located in the center of each of the small, black, insulators on each side of the key. Put one probe on one side of the key and the other probe on the opposite side. Having a 3rd hand helps hold the key while measuring, or a small vise or even a pair of Vise-Grips to hold the key.

Yep, then you're good.

Btw, I would recommend NOT having excess keys, fobs, chatzkys, rabbit feet, lucky charms, etc on the key ring. All that weight hanging out of the lock cylinder WILL cause premature wear on the lock cylinder and greatly hasten it's replacement. Personally I prefer a key ring that has a quick-release feature so only my ignition key goes into the dash and the rest (fob, etc) goes in my pocket. Also helpful if you lock your key in the car as well, since the fob remains in your pocket. YMMV

Default 2000 key

Bought one from ecklers CORVETTE and another from ebay (less costly from hotrodlocksandkeys). They both were gm keys. Took them to stealership and they cut the keys for free. However, i had to go home to get the registration (i had a temporary registration since i had just bought the car) in order to show proof of ownership of the vehicle and so they could check the vin number to make sure it was the right blank. ebay I paid 20 for 2 keys. had the local locksmith cut for 6 bucks. Don't pay more then 30 or so for a key/cut. I just dd this awhile back. the dealer wanted 100 plus. They wanted 30 just to check the resistance. i asked why 30 it takes two seconds with a ohm meter to check the value(i was picking up the plastic door covers so figured I ask) he said it uses a special black box to check the code key value. i just laughed and said ok guess you think everyone is dumb. Went home found the value. Ordered from ebay and had in cut no issues.make sure you get the fat head key. You can use the smaller head but I wanted a original copy and teh smaller head just feels weired when inserting it in the ignition. I bought a skinny and fat one. the skinny head is now the backup of my backup. if you want the ebay vendor shoot me a pm can't post here. violates the rules

I was wondering about that! All I saw were the smaller headed keys. I will look for the right key, thank you. The smaller key would be fine for a backup, I agree.
