Not really Matt --, especially if you have a non California or non Northeast 2000 C5 (or earlier model years anywhere), in which case there are no precats to be removed -- because they don't come with them.
Well obviously, if there are no pre-cats on the car, removal of them for long tube headers is not necessary. I didn't figure I would have to clarify that.
Not really Matt -- the O2 sensors are downstream from the pre cats, and the reason they are there is because they expect readings on the exhaust gases to be within certain parameters. If they don't get them, they adjust the mixture first, set a code later, along with the check engine light.
BTW -- that's also the reason why the MAF translator you also sell does not work for too long a period on the mixture (except at WOT) -- because the O2 sensors continuously monitor and send info to the PCM to readjust the mixture that the MAF translator changed. But that's another thread entirely.
Matt, why not speak with Steve Cole about this issue first, I did... several times. That's what he said, ... several times. Read what I posted above -- I really wanted to use these headers, I really didn't want to return them... I have no agenda here, other than reporting accurately what the manufacturer told me at the time.
I understand the workings of the 02 sensors, PCM, fuel trimms and fuel enrichment and have spoke with Steve Cole many times in regards to issues just like this, but not this one in particular. I guess I just fail to understand how the primary 02 sensors are affected by pre-cats. I wasn't aware the PCM program was any different from a car with pre-cats to one without, especially in the area of the primary 02 sensors, but hey, I could very well be wrong. I guess my main point is that most of our customers that have bought TTS headers had pre-cats prior to the TTS header install and check engine lights have never been an issue.
I appreciate your comments in regards to the headers and hope I did not come across the wrong way. I just really wanted to get across that through my experience selling these, the issue you mention with check engine lights has never came up and also that all long tube headers would be just as likely for this to happen to as they all require the removal of the pre-cats if they are there.
