Engine hood won't stay up

I know for all you guys this will sound like a completely idiotic question, but the two bars that hold up the hood when you are in the engine compartment have lost their "stickiness" and collapse after about a minute. Can someone tell me what they are called and if they can be fixed or if I have to buy new ones. I know calling the dealer will cost me three times anyplace else. Thank you.

Hood struts. And would have never guessed regular auto parts stores would sell them.

oh ha ha. but you would not believe how many times I go to get something and they tell me its a dealer only thing and later I find I can get it elsewhere if I just know where to look. I don't mind looking like a silly girl if it saves me some money!! :]
