Default Clutch Advice

Does anyone know if the C6 Z06 clutch will direct fit on a C5...if so, how much HP and Torque can it hold max?

Also...are there and clutch options out there that can hold 650 Hp and Torque and still drive pretty close to stock on daily street driving?

am tired of the clutch chatter and inabilityto slip the clutch without the car shuddering and making all kinds of noise with my current clutch.

I want to be about have 600+ hp and torque but still have an OEM driving experience in stop and go traffic etc

is it possible?...anyone have a high HP rated clutch that drive pretty close to OEM?

At your power/torque levels, I would seriously consider looking into multi-disk clutches if I were in your shoes.
In particular, I hear/read good things about McLeod, RPS, Mantic, ACT, etc. Might consider Monster's new dual-disk as well, though they were late coming to the party after a very considerable delay, so they don't have as much user feedback as the others yet.

Based on your comments, I would particularly avoid any clutch with paddle-wheel, puck style designs for the disk. They are great for HARD driving or racing, but terrible for street manners/noise. They tend to be very much "on/off" switches.

HTH

Btw, I'm using a McLeod RST with a Tick Master cylinder and am happy with it's street manners, but you are making more power than I am, so if you chose McLeod, I would likely go with their RXT model.
Regardless of clutch choice, I can thoroughly recommend the Tick adjustable master cylinder to you.

thanks brother...yeah I have a six puck style clutch plate now, on/off switch is a good way to describe it, and very noisy, outright rude in regular street driving lol

grips great in hard driving, which admitably is mostly how I drive it....but I'd like to get in and out of my garage everyday without a tussle, and take my wife on a cruise without her complaining that my car makes her nausious.

Ok, so I'm a bit confused. I have a McLeod RXT and I talked to tech last week and was told the RXT is a puck style not full face, RST is full face. I have about 100 miles left on the break-in and although the unit is great once in gear slipping first is tricky. Shifts perfect, pedal feel is great and just a slight bit heavier than stock. All in all it's really good just hoping too smooth first out with a bit more with the break-in.

A local forum member has the RST installed at the same shop I used a couple weeks before mine and says its perfect, no first gear engagement issues at all. Pedal feel, weight and pick-up like stock. It's rated at 800hp so at the crank. Maybe he'll check in on this thread.

Luck to ya,

Darion

RPS Street Twin with 1/2 carbon discs!

I've been running RPS clutches for over 6 years on the road courses with 510+/490+.

Excellent streetable performance, exceptional quality, and completely rebuildable.

This is a "puck" style disk, also sometimes referred to as a "paddle wheel" (note: this particular one just happens to be a Monster clutch disk, but is just used for illustration purposes) :

It/they are great for HARD use, especially at the track and work better when warmed up (hot). Unfortunately, they also have a lot of chatter/noise during routine slow-speed street driving.

Your RXT disk is a "segmented" style that is more forgiving and they usually always have a spring-hub and incorporate a "Marcel spring". McLeod, and others as well, are more of a modified full-face version and several companies use the design. They also usually use a "cerametallic" material on the segmented side and organic material on the opposite side to enhance "streetability" manners. These pictures show the "segmented" side.

Centerforce:

McLeod RXT version:

I realize the pictures here are not all dual-disk clutches, but I just picked them to illustrate the nature of a "segmented" design vs a "puck" design of the disks themselves.

LoneStarFRC, thanks for the information with pictures for those of us that arn't so smart. So what you are saying is the RXT is not a puck style or full face, it falls between the two. I didn't think it was a puck style when I bought but the person at McLeod tech said it was and that it being a puck style was what seperated it from the RST full face.

Gonna shot ya a PM,

Thanks again,

Pat

Yeah, I figured I'd try to post up a couple pictures to illustrate since it sometimes is easier/better to see it directly for some of the CF members rather than just words on paper. You know what they say about a picture being worth,.........etc

Plus, there may be a lot of other folks that have not seen or dealt with some of these design differences between the various manufacturers at all, and I think that fact, plus the various "marketing" terms used by some of them, contribute to some confusion possibly as well.

Yes. You need the flywheel from the LS7 also.

I have decided that I will be running the Mantic street single. It is rated at upwards of I think 750 hp.

I direct experience YET. The main reasons I will be using the Mantic single are the smooth engagement and no chatter with a stock pedal feel.

Hope this helps you. I will try to dig up some links on this clutch for you.

Yes it is..ECS Mantic ER2 Single..rated for 700HP and drives just like stock OEM

Although to avoid maxing out the capacity, might as well get the Mantic 9000 twin with plenty of breathing room!

I was chatting with one of the moderators over at LS1Tech last year about his choice of an RPS dual-disk on his Camaro SS, and he absolutely loves it too. He said even his wife has no problems driving it as well. I've also heard some other very positive comments too.

Wow guys...thanks for all your reponses...very helpfull indeed, and you got me excited about the possibilties of my C5 again knowing that I can have my cake and eat it too by having POWER and an oem feeling clutch.

after researching everything you guys said it seems like you can't go wrong with the RST or the Mantic offerings.... but I think I will go with the Mantic...ECS's reputation precedes itself and I can't imagine they would steer ya wrong to make a few bucks on clutch sales when its such a small percentage of how they make money...plus I really like that Mantic spent years as an OEM clutch manufacturer before they started in on high performance aftermarket stuff, because this means they have spent millions on R&D, Testing, and engineering to meet the OEM qualifications. Thats R&D that we basically get for free in the high performance clutch offerings they have.

again...thanks for the advice everyone

I will keep you updated on how it goes.

have gone back and forth on a game plan power upgrades...origanally was set on an SC package...then decided that for occasional HPDE's Heads/cam and exhuast with an LS6 intake and a tune might be better...but then I started researching twin turbo systems and got excited about them....

But I think the best option for me is to go with more displacement in the very beggining and then upgrade from there

so I am looking at options for putting a 427 in that later I can upgrade with that Hinson Big Single Turbo package

going with bigger displacement as the first big power mod seems like it will save me money in the long run if I want to keep upgrading power beyond 600 hp....and I love the idea of running around with the sound of that big $$ turbo in the Hinson kit and having adjustable boost for both street and track use.

seems like a good way to go...any thoughts or alternate recomendations?
