Default 3.42 rear end swap..

I am guessing the 3.42 diff. only came in the ZO6? If so, will the ZO6 manual diff bolt to my 2002 automatic. If not what vehicle did the 3.42 come in. The other option would be to put the 3.15 diff in my car which has a 2.73 in it now. But will the performance gain be noticeable enough to be worth it?

My 04 C5 (non Z06) is a manual and it came with a 3.42 axle ratio

All c5 manual tranny cars came with the 3:42 differential, to include the 01-04, Z 06's.

However, starting in the late model run.....the 01 Z to 04 Z's, came standard with the 3 rib, heavy duty cases. (All 3:42 Gears)

It would only make sense for you to find a slightly used 3:42 rear differential to install in your car.
Yes it will bolt right up to your with no problem.

What kind of E.T. decrease could I expect to see going from 2.73 to the 3.42??
I found a 3.42 diff. in a local junk yard for $500.00 with 38K miles on it.

Shoot, I picked up my 3-rib for $275. 400 is more realistic though. Offer that. I'm not sure about ET times, but mathematically, the change from 2.73 to 3.42 is a 25% increase in torque at the ground.

3 ribs came in coupes too. Not sure if the 3 rib is that huge of a deal unless you are making big power. I have seen photos of them busted as well. Behind stick shifts.
Personally, I don't think $500 is a horrible deal.
I also don't think mileage is either, but then you never know how it was maintained.
Mine came from a forum member, who maintained it well, it had 120+ K miles on it and was in great shape except for the posi, which are prone to wear no matter the maintenance.

I replaced the clutches with C6 parts, belville springs and output shafts with DTE parts. The rebuild was actually fun to do and allowed me to check the bearings and gears which were in excellent condition.

At the very least, I would replace the output shaft seals.

I didn't think $500.00 was that bad of a price. I use a parts locator call
"Car-Parts.com" and with that I can search all over the US just by putting in the zip code. I see them on there for as much as $1500.00 and as low as $475.00. If anyone is looking for parts (from a door handle to a 1/4 panel) for any car not just for a Vette check that site out just put in your zip code. It will even tell you the name and address of the yard that has it and how far it is from you..

Do it right the first time. Save installation money install a hi stall converter and gears at the same time. A stall is the best bang for the buck on an A4 excluding nitrous. Go with the Yank SS3200 or SS3600

Any recommendations for a tuner in the central Florida Daytona area? I have a friend that does all kinds of tuning but he is so busy it is hard to catch him when he is in town, and kinda far away in Melbourne FL.

I have that setup and can not wait to get it in the car. The 3.42's are already in, just need to install the Yank SS3200 and cooler. Waiting on a few more parts to rebuild the torque tube etc.

Make sure you put the cooler in front of radiator in the center near the bottom. I have found this to be the best place to put it. No need to get a cooler with a fan as the air coming into the front of the car is more than enough. Do the front plate mod and Z06 screens for max airflow.

My cooler does have a fan which I will be glad about in the summer time in traffic here in southern cali. I know the flow over the cooler would be better without the fan while going down the road, but I am confident that this will still be a good all round setup and will work great.

Kinda like this look Blitz......rather nasty. Hmmmm, although I don't wish to become plasti dip man.

My cooler is in the right front, no fan, and trans temps stay below 175, all the time. I have the Z06 screens, but not the license plate area. No plate will get you a ticket in Oregon.
