Default Pulling engine in back yard.

Anyone have any tips? I can't believe this happened, but I popped piston #7 at the track yesterday on my very first pass. AFR was 12.6 timing 23-26 degrees. I went right home and got the heads off and saw the damage.

I am on jack stands and can get access to a hoist. How do you think I should pull the motor? It is just a block right now...heads/intake/water pump are off the car.

Lots of good writeups on this if you google it a little. The motor was designed to drop out the bottom but some have done it from the top which might be useful depending on the amount of clearance you can get on stands...

Here are a couple of good writeups:

I pulled my short block out in my 2-car garage using an engine hoist and jack stands. It helps that you have the heads off already. That's about the only way to access the bellhousing bolts. Bring the engine hoist in from the side (mine didn't have enough reach from the front) and support the engine. Then drop the cradle and roll it out from under the car. Support the torque tube, finish disconnecting the short block and then lift it out with the hoist. Good idea to have the hood off for this job.

This is one of my favorite garage shots. Nothing like spending some quality time wrenching on your Corvette:

Looks like you have done it befor from how clean that front cradle is. Nice job here... Robert

chevy406 - Can you explain why you would drop the cradle to pull the engine out from the top? I'm not understanding why that would be necessary.

You have to pull the engine forward to get it out. Since the oil pan nestles in between the subframe, you have to drop the cradle to get it out of the way.

mchicia - if you're not doing a complete rebuild, I have a couple pistons for sale:

Oh I see. I was assuming you would pull the propshaft by dropping the rear before pulling the engine, but I suppose this would be a bit less work.

You can do it that way if you want, but once you have all the accessories off the engine it's not that hard to get the front subframe out (and it's easier to support than the entire drivetrain). Just make sure you jack up the end of the torque tube so it doesn't tilt down and stress the rear subframe mounts. If you ahve one of those thick belly plates like I do then you can just wedge a 1x2 in there and let it rest on that.

Good job with the explanation Lothar. It is a job to pull the shortblock from a C5 without a lift and by yourself. But it can be done in a home garage.

By the way Robert - that was the first time my front cradle was removed in 249,000 miles. Purple Power cleaner can do some wonders to remove grime on aluminum.
