I want to have the rear end changed to a 3.42 in my 2000 C5 and would like to upgrade the Torque Converter at the same time. I live in the far western suburbs of Chicago, any recommendations?

As with any high stall converter, do an aftermarket transmission cooler. The slipping of the converter will generate much more heat. You will need tuning to fix the shift points etc too. It is smart to do both at the same time. For 3.42's, a 3200-3600 stall would be good for a street car. I chose 3200 for my 3.42 setup. Haven't installed yet though.
Also, I am having the torque tube pulled and rebuilt with polyurithane couplers and new bearings. Best to do it all at once if you have any doubts about the drive train. I also opted for the C6 differential output shafts and gear to handle the launching.
All this makes the job much more expensive than you would like it to be. I just went through this all too. I postponed my appointment to buy these extra parts and have it done right.
