My '99 has 48k miles. Oil changed religiously every 2.5k. Recently changed air filter. Other than that, since the 17k miles it had when I got it, I haven't done anything else mechanically. Car also gets driven now about 2-3 weeks per year. I'm about to drive it again while on vacation (it's in storage), and got to wondering if there's anything that *really* needs to be done for the usual big maintenance. Suggestions please! Thanks.
Re: 30k miles & beyond--maintenance question (SLO VETTE)
I don't think anything really "needs" to be done, but you might think about changing the transmission and differential fluids, along with a new fuel filter. If you have time and inclination, I would check all hoses and electrical connections too. :yesnod: :)
Re: 30k miles & beyond--maintenance question (carpe dm)
since yours is so "SLO" I would say change the fuel filter cheap job. Check your serp belt out. That is really all I would be concerned with. if it has been in storage for a while check tire pressure and also make sure your battery is charged up, ohh and drive it like ya stole it more than 3 weeks a year :yesnod: :chevy :seeya
Re: 30k miles & beyond--maintenance question (lostsoulny)
thanks guys, that's what i thought.
car's out in california, unfortunately. well, it's nice when i go out there & visit, but sucks when i'm back here with no car and want to go for a cruise.
when i win the lottery i'll park it in a nice secure garage here in nyc, since parking costs a small fortune that i'd rather spend elsewhere. until then...
Re: 30k miles & beyond--maintenance question (SLO VETTE)
With the car sitting so much, I'd change the coolant, too. I know it's supposed to last 150,000 miles, but that assumes it gets circulated regularly. The coolant prevents corrosion by allowing additives in the coolant to sacrifice themselves rather than letting the metal in the engine corrode (kinda like the anode in a water heater). Though the Dex-Cool product lasts a long time, what can happen if your car sits for extended periods is all the additive is eaten up in some of the nooks and crannies in the engine, allowing corrosion to begin.
Re: 30k miles & beyond--maintenance question (SLO VETTE)
This is my .02 but GM ( I know this may be getting old but. . ) spends lots of money time and effort developing the maintenance schedules for these vehicles. Check the video and the owners manual. If you want to be safe, then use 75% of what the manual suggests. Save the money for Mods :yesnod:
Re: 30k miles & beyond--maintenance question (SLO VETTE)
At 50K I did a tranny (A4) flush/service; flush/fill power steering fluid,
brake fluid, and coolant flush and fill, and a new serpentine belt on the '98. I switch air filters about every 12-15K (I use the resuable K&N stock replacement, and keep 2 for quicker changes).
