Default A/C Hot and cold intermittently :(

Hi all:

I did a search for a/c problems on here and I have seen some people with different ideas but no one seems to post what they found wrong after trying them. My problem is a little different. My A/c on my 20000 all of a sudden went warm on drivers side and cold on passenger side but now it is intermittent. I drive the car and sometime it gets as cold as the passenger side and then 20 secs later begins to blow warm and then 3 mins later goes back to semi cold. Any ideas? Am I low on freon or do I have to take the dash apart and replace something? Any help appreciated

You need to check your DIC codes.

You either have a faulty ac blend door servo "actuator" or you are low on charge.

If you have codes on the AC they will point to the failed gear on the actuator.

I just went through this fix and what a pain in the neck to replace it. Literally

Hello thanks for the reply. I checked codes and none except the history ones and none are for AC. My freon level is where it is supposed to be at as I had it checked and I figure if it was getting low the ac clutch would be turning off and on indicating a leak which I have none. I guess my next step is the actuator? Where is it located under the dash where the hazard switch is? The passenger one should be fine as it blows ice cold so I guess it is the drivers side. Do you have a pic you can point me to to the drivers side one?

I removed the hvac fuses in the floor panel fuse box today and even disconnected the battery to reset it. It still blows out 15 degrees warmer than the passenger side and goes colder and then warmer all on its own. Any help appreciated

If you had a bad actuator you would have a hvac code. Was the freon charge checked by a pro who knows these cars? It has to get really low for the ac clutches to disengage. I would revisit this area, C5 is very sensitive about having the correct pressures.

be sure you RESET the hvac codes even if none are displayed. I had a clicking broken actuator with no codes at one point. After holding reset they showed up.

The actuator removal is a pain. Some say they can remove it from under the driver side dash an i guess you can if you are small and limber but for me that was near impossible laying halfway in a seat upside down and then try and get your arms in small places to work.

i
I had to remove the dash completely and i can help you throw that process if you need it.

After doing a reset and you have no codes... proceed to a shop and have your ac evac and recharged. Avoid the auto zone cans.

Thanks for info! I checked the codes again today and even though it is not showing one on the dash when I run the car I went into the diagnostic mode and it shows a lot of History codes. But one that is showing up is hvac B0361 H C. Does this mean not only do I have a history of that code but I have an existing code with it today as well?

Yes, some codes will show as history as soon as you turn the car off even if the condition still exists. I would reset ALL the codes and see what returns. Resetting the hvac code will also cycle the actuator and with a lot of luck possibly fix the problem....but not very likely.

Yes you have a bad blend door servo "ac actuator" not the correct term.

B0361 (left actuator feedback short to ground)

I purchased my replacement from rockauto.com "dorman"

complete pita to replace
