Ok, I need a little advice. Most of the time I drive my car, its to the drag strip on the weekends, since I don;t use it much as a daily driver. But then there are a number of trips to the Auto Cross and more and more trips to the road course (maybe 4 - 6 times per year) as well. I'm getting a little worried about oil temp, blowing engines, etc., especially since I've heard a number of Z06's have in fact blown the engine on the track.
Looking for someone who has added an oil cooler or combo oil cooler and new radiator. I'm getting some conflicting reports as to which I would need. Rippie and Lingenfelter offer both, with Lingenfelter going for the combo oil/radiator combo. Rippie offers the oil cooler separately, but also has the combo. Don;t know of the other offerings.
Any help, experience, do's, don'ts, etc., would be really appreciated!
What kind of oil temps are you seeing? I've run as high as 290 when road racing with no issues. Synthetic will not break down at those temperatures. I just make sure to change the oil after every track event and before as well if I've put more than a 1000 miles or so on the car.
There are a lot of choises to keep both the coolant and the oil cooler. I think that I choose the most simple one. :yesnod:
I installed a Be-Cool radiator, which has a much larger capacity than the stock radiator, is all alunimum, reduced the coolant AND the oil temperatures about 30 degrees, and was very easy to install. It can remove all the heat your engine produces.
When I come off the track after 30 min of hard running on a hot day, my coolant temperature is about 185. I have a 178 degree thermostat in the engine. My oil temp is about 260.
Before I got the Be-Cool radiator, the respective temperatures were about 235 for the coolant and about 295 for the oil, and this was also with the 178 thermoatat.
I have decided that I do not need a seperate oil cooler, but if you decide you need one, you oil temperatures could be even lower. Hope this helps. :D
I've only been to the track once and it was cold. I did not keep track of the oil temp. Been responding to the reports I've heard of guys blowing there engines because of either low oil or heat. I would suspect that the low oil level is the real problem, but I'm choosing to be as safe as possible. My racing friends have indicated oil temps in cold weather near the 260-280 mark.
I just installed trans and oil coolers on my C5. You can pick up a trick black billet filter plate with side ½” exits made for our car (LS1) for about $45. (Canton racing) The billet oil filter relocation is around $140 and can be mounted to the fan shroud vertically. Run all 10AN and stainless hose to a cooler mounted either in front of the radiator, in the nose with a fan or do what I did and mount a B&M racing cooler in the nose, open the fog light area with a Dremel and put Z06 screens on. In your case with road racing you may want to use a large fan-cooler and open the fog light area to breath. I can fax you the complete parts list and diagram I made for my set up if you want. My oil stays around 190 to 210 when it was going to 240 to 260 prior to the cooler. I also used an oil thermostat to pull the oil through the cooler only after 180 degrees. I have pictures if you’re interested. You can go with DRM or others for a pre-built kit but a bit pricey. My setup for coolers, which are polished, all lines and fittings was around $600. If you just do the oil your looking around $400. The parts came from Canton, B&M and Jegs. Have fun.
