Just installed a dual cone air filter system. As I was disassembling and putting the new piece in I was wondering what the purpose of the air hose is that connects to the filter system. I'm sure it's necessary otherwise GM would not have put it there, but what purpose does it serve and IS it necessary?
Note: I did search "air box hose" and "air pump hose" and didn't see anything that answered the question. I did see where one person disconnected the hose, but a filter system on the hose directly so it had it's own air source. I saw where others found the hose simply laying there not connected to anything.
Secondairy AIR injection system. There is a pump that sucks air from that hose and pushes it into the exhaust manifolds in order to get the catalytic converters up to operating temperature quicker.
You can remove the whole system but you'll get a CEL and need to have the PCM tuned to ignore the error code.
If you keep it, it does either need to attach to the back side of the air filter or have some other filtered air source. You don't want it sucking up debris and depositing it into the cats.
