Default Advice on Brakes

I have a 99 vert that I do a lot of canyon runs with, very spirited driving. I have some Hawk HP Plus brake pads on there and absolutely love their stopping power, but absolutely hate the insane amount of brake dust.

I want to go with a less dusty pad but want to keep the same stopping power. I'm thinking I need to upgrade my whole brake system to something with more pistons and bigger rotors, so that I can get the same stopping power as my HP Plus pads but in something ceramic that produces less dust.

I am not worried about heat build up as I will change to the dustier stickier pads for track days, but want at least as good a stopping power as my stock brake system with the Hawk HP Plus pads.

can you guys recomend a caliper, rotor, pad combo for the street that has phenomenal stopping power without all the dust?

Instead of investing $2,000. or more for bigger rotors/calipers & ceramics.

Wouldn't switching to some $200. or less ceramics to fit your present rotor/caliper set up, make more sense?

If you don't like the way the ceramics hold your car with the present rotors/calipers....then at that time, spring for the more costly set up.

its a valid point, but I find it hard to believe that any ceramic pads are going to hold as good as the race/street Hawk HP Plus pads unless you are upgrading the rotors and cailpers too.

Doesn't seem like the laws of physics will allow that all things being equal, i.e. that a less grippy pad will grip as good as a more grippy pad on the same brake setup.

if there is a ceramic pad that grips as good as the Hawk HP Plus pad I am definately interested.

How do feel about noise? I would suggest you run the Carbotech XP8 front and the 1521 on the rear. This combo will create dust on the front but not is much as the HP+. Also, Carbotech brake pads are extremely rotor friendly and contain 100% non-corrosive brake dust they will not harm your wheels or the paint on your car. Hawk pads are very corrosive. I will be happy to help you give me a call at 216-780-8825.

A high torque brake compound with a wide operating temperature range of 200°F-1350°F+ (93°C to 732°C+). Carbotech™ XP8™ is the first of our racing compounds. Good initial bite at race temperatures, high coefficient of friction, excellent modulation and release characteristics. Extremely high fade resistance and very rotor friendly. Excellent as a front brake pad for lighter applications weighing around 2,400lbs or less. Perfect for track day use with any tire and can still be driven safely to and from the track. Carbotech™ does NOT recommended XP8™ as a daily driven street pad due to elevated levels of dust and noise.

The Carbotech™ 1521™ is our high performance street compound. The 1521™ compound is known for its release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. 1521™ is also a very low dusting and low noise compound with an excellent initial bite. This compound's excellent linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Carbotech™ 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 800°F (426°C+). 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle or fleet vehicle. Carbotech™ 1521™ is NOT recommended for ANY track use.

I recommend HAWK HPS pads, they stop better than ZO6 pads and dust less than regular pads. Those HAWK HP PLUS pads are racing pads !

I like Baer's big rotor kit--oversized 2-piece rotors with new brackets and hardware that install like replacing with stock parts. Stock calipers,no undoing brake lines,18" or bigger front wheels needed, big increase in stopping power.

I use the Wilwood kit with Polymatrix Q pad for the street.
Almost NO dust.
