i have a 03 z06 with the c6 fuel pump assembly. well while in the process of dropping the tank the cross over pipe was being a pain the *** to get unhooked. decided to lower the transmission and rear end a little bit to get some more clearance. well after that i go up and touch the cross over pipe and the tank drops completely out of the car and breaks the nipple off the top of the hat that heads up to the motor.
my question is this. can we just put an adapter on the top hat of and run an inline fuel filter? or does the fuel filter in the top hat do something more than just filter the fuel?

Man the only advice that I can give you is replace it all .. You already know what a pain in the butt it is to drop the tank I would hate to know that you would have to do it twice .

i don't see the difference between the fuel filter in the hat verses an inline fuel filter. that is why i am asking if the filter has another duty other than filtering the fuel.
fuel will fill the canister that the original fuel filter sits in. it pressurizes the passenger tank, pressurizes the fuel line, and pressurizes the fuel regulator. so can it be run with a fuel filter out side the tank in line.
it is a pain in the *** to drop tank, well the metal crossover pipe is, but it looks like as long as there is a fuel filter on the line then we are fine. Aftermarket kits puts the filter outsite so i don't know the difference.

I know this and brother I had a Cobra before this car and I did put a inline fuel filter on her and never had a problem with it
its all good, i about sh*t when the tank dropped out of the bottom of the car on the lift. then i saw the damage done to the nipple on the top hat. my buddy spent most of the day looking at it and wondering how to fix it. we tapped the top of the hat, where the nipple was, and put a fitting on there. i have to work tomorrow so he is going to install it and see what happens.
we did pressurize the little canister and it held pressure with the new fitting. i just don't really want to drop the tank again so that is why i was asking if others have done this. probably not as most just go with a aftermarket set up.

I'd call RPM and see if they have any spare tanks or hats; not exactly sure what you broke, but with the 1000's of C5's that have been wrecked, fuel tanks/parts are in abundance
Compare the new fuel pump with the original to verify that you have the correct part. Install the new fuel pump. Connect the fuel lines to the pump. Lift the fuel tank up and install the retaining strap. Reconnect the filler tube hose and the electrical connector. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Fill the tank with gas. Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
Tapped the nipple and put a fitting in and running a 2000 vette in line fuel filter my buddy had laying around. Bolted every thing back together and started the car. No smell of gas any where. Going out today and buying a fuel pressure gauge to check line pressure.
